Monday, May 22, 2006

SHREVEPORT – Seeded fourth in the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament for the second consecutive year, the Centenary baseball team looks to repeat their magic from the 2005 season for a repeat trip to the championship game.  The Gents qualified for their third postseason appearance in as many years in the Mid-Con as Chicago State completed a Sunday sweep over Southern Utah to eliminate the Thunderbirds from contention.

Centenary (23-28, 11-11 Mid-Con) faces top-seeded and eight-time defending champions Oral Roberts (35-14, 17-2 Mid-Con) in the first round.  The Golden Eagles are hosting the conference tournament at J.L. Johnson Stadium in Tulsa, Okla., for the second straight year.

Also vying for the Mid-Con’s automatic berth to an NCAA Regional are second-seeded Western Illinois (30-30, 14-8 Mid-Con) and three-seed Oakland (19-36, 13-11 Mid-Con).

Senior outfielder Tim Ryan leads the Gents with a .398 average, ranking him 34th in the nation and tops in the Mid-Con.  He also leads the conference in hits (74), walks (36), and on base percentage (.491).

Third baseman Jimmy Baker leads the way with 38 runs batted in and 14 doubles.  Fellow juniors Justin Darr, Justin Huff, Matt Webb, and Torey Williams are all also hitting above .300 for the year.  Sophomore catcher Alex Maldonado is hitting .322 and has thrown out a Mid-Con best 26 runners on steal attempts.

On the mound, junior Will Kaage leads the way with a 4-3 record and a 3.46 ERA.  Also with four wins, both out of the bullpen, are seniors Kris Calhoun (4-4) and Cam Feightner (4-3).  Calhoun leads the Gents with 42 strikeouts while Feightner’s two saves lead the staff.

The Gents take on ORU on Thursday, May 25, at 7 p.m.  Live stats will be available throughout the tournament for all games, and can be found at the following link: Also, all ORU games will be broadcast live and can be heard on the internet at
