Wednesday, May 31, 2006

SHREVEPORT—Centenary head volleyball coach Jenny Hazelwood has announced the 2006 schedule for the Maroon and White. The Ladies will take part in three road tournaments including events hosted by NCAA Tournament participant Tennessee and TCU in addition to sponsoring their own tournament. Altogether, Centenary will host 14 matches under the roof of the Gold Dome and will begin Mid-Continent Conference play at home on September 23rd.

“We are excited about the upcoming season,” said Hazelwood. “With our strong returning players and a great incoming class, we are looking forward to starting competition play in the fall.”

The Ladies begin the 2006 fall campaign with the Tennessee Tournament where Centenary will go up against the host Lady Vols as well as Miami of Ohio and Virginia. The team then bounces back to Shreveport for a home tournament with Jackson State, Nicholls State, Central Arkansas, and Southern.

The second week of September finds the Maroon and White traveling west down I-20 to the TCU Tournament. In Ft. Worth the Ladies will take on more strong competition in Ole Miss, Davidson, and the host Horned Frogs.

“We have some challenging tournaments on our schedule in addition to some other tournaments that we feel we can be very successful in,” said Hazelwood. “The tournaments are good for us as we get the opportunity to test ourselves against teams that will present many different styles of play.”

The Ladies will also participate in the Prairie View A&M Tournament as well as various other mid-week matches against familiar opponents such as Alcorn State, Mississippi Valley State, Texas Southern, and Southern. Teams appearing on the mid-week docket for the first time in recent years include Louisiana Tech (Oct. 10 in Ruston, La.) and the Air Force Academy (Oct. 16 in Lorman, Miss.).

Centenary will also open Mid-Con play at home in 2006, something Coach Hazelwood has not been accustomed to during her tenure.

“We are very happy to open league play at home. With the talent we have this year, it will be interesting to see where we stand when the conference matches begin,” said Hazelwood.

The Ladies open the Mid-Con portion of their schedule with IUPUI on September 23rd. The team will then travel to Oakland, Valparaiso, and Oral Roberts before returning home to face Western Illinois and UMKC on the second weekend in October. After a quick trip to IUPUI, Centenary will host Valpo and Oakland on the 27th and 28th. The Ladies wrap up their home schedule with Oral Roberts on November 3rd and conclude Mid-Con play on the road the following weekend at UMKC and Western Illinois.
