Golden Eagles Take Mid-Con Opener From Ladies, 3-0
Friday, September 23, 2005

TULSA, Okla.—On a day in which the Centenary volleyball team learned that it would not return to its home campus for some time, the Ladies played like they had something else on their mind in losing their Mid-Con opener to Oral Roberts 3-0 (30-19, 30-14, 30-19). Due to the potential effects of Hurricane Rita on Shreveport, Centenary will stay on the road in hopes of riding out the storm in a safe area.

Centenary (8-9, 0-1 Mid-Con) matched Oral Roberts point for point in the opening moments of game one. With the scored tied at 9-9, Ori Zuzic pounded down a blistering kill for the Golden Eagles, which was immediately followed by an attack error by Ashlee Freeman for the Ladies. The two-point margin would hold until 19-17 when ORU reeled off five consecutive points behind three kills and two Centenary errors. The Ladies would only manage two more points the rest of the way as the powerful service game of Zuzic would close out the game at 30-19.

Again the Ladies started out in contention, but game two would play out the same as the first. With the score at 8-7 in Oral Robert’s favor, Centenary would surrender nine straight points on several attack errors and a pair of kills each from Zuzic and Kim Snow. The Ladies hit at a .000 percent clip while allowing four more aces in the second game as the maroon and white never found a rhythm in losing 30-14.

Oral Roberts (5-5, 1-0 Mid-Con) took control in the third and final game early. The tandem of Zuzic and Snow proved too strong as the duo combined for five of ORU’s first six kills. Multiple Centenary attack errors and a pair of net violations put the Ladies in a hole they would not climb out of in dropping the game 30-19.

Tracee Byrd led the Ladies with nine kills in the match. Danielle Bochat and Ashlee Freeman each finished with seven kills while Liliana Williams defensed a team-high seven digs.

The Golden Eagles were led by Zuzic’s 14 kills and three aces. Jojo Souza and Jackie Oliveira contributed 10 kills apiece in the win while Snow added nine kills. Setter Brittany Arnold effectively ran the ORU offense as she dished out 32 assists on the evening.

Centenary will next travel to Springfield, Mo., to play a neutral site match against North Dakota State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
