SHREVEPORT – The Centenary men’s soccer team won their first game of the season, a 2-1 victory over visiting Dallas Baptist in the Gents home opener.  The Gents used a combination of muscle and steady offensive pressure to keep the Patriots on their toes.

The Gents came out firing in the first half, pounding the DBU defense and keeper with 19 shots, including a pair of goals.  Sophomore Ben Calderara collected a long pass from senior Jonathan Wright in the 16th minute, beating Patriot keeper Jonathan Callahan one-on-one for Centenary’s first goal of the season.

Sophomore Aaron Volanski would add another, just minutes before the break, beating the DBU keeper across the net after a solid setup pass from freshman Skye Vergenal.

Dallas Baptist would keep things interesting as they closed the gap to a 2-1 deficit at the 51:01 mark.  The Patriots’ Edmond Freeman found himself free after a misplayed clear and attacked Gents keeper Donnie Henderson with a one-on-one chance of his own.  After making the initial diving save, Henderson couldn’t regroup in time to stop Freeman from scoring on the rebound.

Henderson would come up big in the second half, as the Patriots returned the favor and launched 15 shots on the Centenary keeper.  With seven of his eight saves coming in the second half, Henderson again came through in the clutch, making key saves down the stretch.

The Gents are on the road this weekend as they belatedly open their Mid-Continent Conference season at Valparaiso Saturday after having their initial match against Oral Roberts postponed because of Hurricane Rita.  Centenary will then travel to take on Illinois-Chicago in non-conference action on Sunday.
