VALPARAISO, Ind – The Centenary men’s soccer team fell on the road in their Mid-Continent Conference opener to Valparaiso 1-0.  The match was a hard fought contest, seeing a total of 39 fouls whistled and eight cautions handed out.

After playing the first 45 minutes to a scoreless draw, the Crusaders jumped on the scoreboard in the 53rd minute with a goal from Clifton Brown.

Despite Valpo (3-6, 1-1 Mid-Con) getting off 18 shots in the match, Gents keeper Donnie Henderson played another strong game between the pipes, consistently giving Centenary (1-7, 0-1 Mid-Con) opportunities to even the score.  Henderson collected a game-high seven saves in the contest.  With 59 saves through the Gents’ first eight matches and ten to go, he is on pace to shatter the 16 year-old school record that currently stands at 102.

Senior J.J. Meyer led the Centenary offensive strike with three shots, two on goal, while Aaron Volanksi added three shots as well.  Freshman Nicolas Orta chimed in with a pair of shots coming off the bench.

The Gents continue their road play as they travel to take on Illinois-Chicago tomorrow at 1 p.m. before heading home for a four-match homestand.
