CHICAGO – The Centenary men’s soccer team dropped their second contest of the weekend, falling 8-1 on the road at Illinois-Chicago. The Gents were outshot 23-2 as the Flames kept constant pressure on the Centenary defensive backfield and keeper. After giving up four goals in the first half, sophomore Ben Calderara put the Gents (1-8-0) on the board at the onset of the second frame. His shot from 20 yards out, assisted by Brody Sager, sailed past UIC keeper Rose Cain in the 47th minute. Illinois-Chicago (4-3-1) would respond by putting another four goals past keeper James Speed, the last three against a shorthanded Centenary squad playing a man down after freshman Skye Vergenal was ejected at the 58:12 mark. Speed would collect 10 saves on the day as the Flames used an extremely aggressive attack which accounted for seven offsides calls. The Gents return home for a four game homestand as they play Mid-Continent Conference foe IUPUI on Saturday before host Ouachita Baptist on Sunday. |
