INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—The Centenary volleyball team showed signs of improvement on Saturday after suffering a disappointing loss the previous day to Chicago State. Although the Ladies took several steps in the right direction, according to head coach Jenny Hazelwood, the team still fell at the hands of IUPUI (30-23, 30-21, 30-17) to drop to 0-5 in Mid-Continent Conference play this season.

Centenary (9-14, 0-5 Mid-Con) played hard in the opening game but struggled with its passing, which prevented the Ladies from setting up their offense. The maroon and white hit for just a .030 percentage en route to committing 21 errors in addition to only 24 kills in the match.

IUPUI (10-8, 3-2 Mid-Con) used its middles to exploit the holes in the Centenary defense. The Jaguars’ Tracy Bailey ran an abundance of quick sets to take advantage of the Ladies single blocker, finishing with a match-high 13 kills.

The IUPUI offense clicked on all cylinders throughout the match as evidenced by its 49 kills on just 12 errors for a hitting percentage of .336. Carol Newell was the only player on either team to add double digit kills besides Bailey as she collected 10 kills in the win. Christy McConnell chipped in with 13 digs while Devika Bellamy passed out 33 assists for the Jaguars.

Tracy Byrd led Centenary with eight kills and 11 digs on the evening. Stephanie Scanlan played well defensively for the Ladies as she totaled 10 digs in the loss and Danielle Bochat recorded six kills to go with her nine digs.

Centenary will take five days to rest and prepare for next weekend’s Mid-Con slate, which brings both Oakland and defending conference champion Valparaiso to the Gold Dome. The Ladies will host OU on Friday at 7 p.m. before taking on Valpo at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
