ELMURST, Ill – The Centenary men’s swimming team has been selected to finish second in a the 2005-06 Mid-Continent Conference preseason poll, as voted on by coaches of participating institutions.  The Gents’ 11 points follow six-time defending champion Oakland (16 points, 4 first place votes) and narrowly edges out Western Illinois (10 points, 1 first place vote) and IUPUI (9 points).  Valparaiso received four points.

Head Coach Butch Jordan, the 2004-05 Mid-Con Men’s Coach of the Year, returns a strong squad of swimmers that includes 04-05 first-team All-Mid-Con performer Robert Hendricks, the only non-Oakland swimmer to earn the accolade.  Joining Hendricks are last season’s second-team honorees Matija Fojs, Ross Gilbert, Dustin Myers, and Robert Trempski.

On the women’s side, Oakland is also the favorite, garnering 16 points and four first place votes.  Western Illinois (12 points, 1 first place vote) is second, followed by IUPUI (9 points), Valparaiso (8 points), and Centenary (5 points).

Centenary opens their season on Friday, October 21, as the Ladies and Gents host Spring Hill College.  The meet, which was postponed because of Hurricane Rita, will take place at 6 p.m. at the Centenary Fitness Center.
