COLLEGE STATION, Tex.—Individuals from both the Centenary men’s and women’s tennis teams participated in the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional Championships hosted by Texas A&M this weekend. Women’s players Heather Kelley and Christine Majchrowicz along with men’s team members Josh Pinto, Arthur Okura, and Russ Patrick all competed in their first outing of the season.

The Gents got off on the right foot when both Pinto and Okura advanced with walkover wins on day one. Pinto then lost to Michael Venus from the University of Texas 6-0, 6-0, the 16th seed in the tournament. Okura was pitted in the next round against Jacobo Hernandez of Tulane who emerged victorious after a 6-0, 6-0 match as well. Russ Patrick was defeated by TCU’s Andrew Ulrich 6-2, 6-0 and fell in a tough battle to Andrew Rust of Texas-Pan American 1-6, 7-5, 10-6.

On day two of the tournament, Okura lost his final match to Anthony Portois of Texas-San Antonio, but Pinto won convincingly over Kris Gloc of Texas Southern. Pinto then advanced to the round of 16 before falling to Jonah Kane-West of Tulane 6-2, 6-0. He ended his play in the tournament with a 3-2 overall record.

The Ladies began play on Friday with Heather Kelley and Christine Majchrowicz each suffering opening round losses. Kelley took the win in her second match over Stephen F. Austin’s Lauren Nowicki 6-3, 6-3 but lost to Aziza Aba Butain of North Texas 6-1, 6-1 to end her run. Majchrowicz also played two more matches as she was downed by Giovanna Arrondo of Louisiana-Monroe (6-1, 6-1) and Christina Amo of Texas State (6-2, 7-6 [2]).

The tournament completes the fall season for both the Ladies and Gents as both teams look forward to mid-January when head-to-head dual matches begin.
