Marking the first time in program history two Centenary players earned all-conference accolades, the Ladies shot 333 in Tuesday’s final round to finish in third place, standing with a tournament score of 971. Played on the par-72, 6,019-yard course at StoneBridge, in Bossier City, three rounds of 83 paced the Ladies in Tuesday’s round. The rounds, which were the low rounds for the Ladies in the final round, were shot by the sophomores Leigh Newton (Edmonton, Alberta) , Tracy Williams (Van Alstyne, Texas) and Garza. Garza became the first player in Centenary history to become a two-time member of the Mid-Con All-Conference team. The McKinney, Texas, native finished her tournament in eighth place with a three-round score of 241 (78-80-83), named second team all-conference. Garza shot par over the final three holes to finish with the 83 in Tuesday’s final round. Mims, a junior from Texarkana, Texas, finished just one stroke from standing in a tie for fifth place in the conference tournament. With the top-five finishers in the tournament earning first team all-conference honors, Mims finished just out of becoming the first Centenary women’s golfer to earn first team accolades. The junior shot 84 in Tuesday’s round to join Garza as a second team All-Mid-Con honoree. Mims had a tournament score of 237 (80-73-84), recording the lowest round of any Centenary player with the 73 shot

On the brink of pulling off the unpredictable, the women’s golf team stands in second place after two rounds, led by the stellar play of junior Chloe’ Mims (Texarkana, Texas) and sophomore Jessica Garza (McKinney, Texas) . Tying her season-low round in the second round of the Mid-Con Championship, Mims shot up the leaderboard with a 1-over 73 Monday afternoon. With 18 holes to play, the Centenary junior sits in a tie for second place in the tournament, playing in the final group of the tournament Tuesday. Joining Mims in the top five of the tournament, Garza shot rounds of 78-80 Monday to stand in a tie for fourth. The steady Centenary sophomore, who leads the Ladies in stroke average this season, led all tournament players on par 3’s, shooting even par on par 3’s over 36 holes. Heavily involved in the Ladies standing in second after the first day, freshman Brittany Blackwell (Colleyville, Texas) picked the right time of the season to shoot her career-low round. In Monday’s first round, Blackwell shot one of three 80’s on the Centenary team, sitting in a tie for 11th after the first day. Centenary sophomore Tracy Williams (Van Alstyne, Texas) shot 80-89 Monday, while fellow-sophomore Leigh Newton (Edmonton, Alberta) recorded rounds of 84-85 to stand tied for 18th. As a team, Centenary shot 318-320 (638) to stand four strokes ahead of third place Oakland University. On the men’s side, senior David Viviano (Lafayette, La.) was well off to ending his collegiate career with a bang, carding a 1-under 71 in Monday’s first round and standing in the top 10 after 18 holes.

Played at the par-71, 5,823-yard Timberline Golf Course, in Calera, Ala., the Ladies were led by junior Chloe’ Mims (Texarkana, Texas) in Tuesday’s final round. Mims shot a 77 Tuesday to finish in a tie for 54th with a tournament score of 243. She showed the most improvement amongst Centenary golfers from the second to third rounds, shaving eight strokes and shooting the low round for the Ladies in the tournament. Sophomore Jessica Garza (McKinney, Texas) finished in a tie for 48th in the tournament, shooting a 78 in Tuesday’s round. Garza shot 242 (82-82-78) over the three-round event to stand as the low finisher for the Ladies. Finishing in 73rd place, freshman Brittany Blackwell (Colleyville, Texas) had a round of 88 in Tuesday’s final round. The freshman finished with a tournament score of 259, shooting an 81 in the second round Monday. For a three-round event, Blackwell set a new career low with the 259. Fellow-freshman Mary Kate Byrne (Natchez, Miss.) also set a new career low for score in a three-round tournament, finishing in a tie for 77th with a score of 262. She shot a round of 87 Tuesday. In a tie of 79th, sophomore Leigh Newton (Edmonton, Alberta) finished with a score of 263. She finished with a round of 88 in the final round. The University of South Alabama held onto the first day lead, winning the tournament with a score of 915. The Jaguars shot 302 in Tuesday’s round, led by Sara Marti’s 6-over 77. In Monday’s first round, the McKinney, Texas, native recovered with a 37 on the back nine, shooting eight strokes better than her front nine score of 45. The University of South Alabama holds the overall team lead with a score of 613 (309-304). The Jaguars are followed closely by Eastern Kentucky, which stand in second place with a 616 (303-313). The Ladies were led by sophomore Jessica Garza in this week’s tournament. Finishing with a team score of 641 in the Lady Jaguar Invitational, hosted by South Alabama, the Ladies registered its season-best score for a two-round tournament. In Tuesday’s final round, Centenary shot a 325 to finish tied for 19th in this week’s tournament. Garza, the reigning Mid-Continent Conference Female Golfer of the Week, led the Ladies with a 78 in Tuesday’s final round to place in a tie for 41st in the event. The Mckinney, Texas, native shot 77-78 for a 155 in the tournament, her best two-round score this season. Junior Chloe’ Mims (Texarkana, Texas) finished tied for 44th in the tournament with a two-round score of 156. Mims, who was tied for fourth after Monday’s first round, shot an 83 in the final round. She shot her best round of the season in Monday’s first round with a 1-over 73, notching a new season low for score in a two-round tournament. The 316 shot in the first round set a new season low for Centenary for a team score in the first round. The story of the day for the Ladies was the play of Mims. The Texarkana, Texas, native shot a season-best round of 1-over 73 Monday to stand tied for fourth in the 20-team tournament. Mims shot par on the back nine in Monday’s round to stand in a four-way tie for fourth place heading into Tuesday’s final round. Mims shot two strokes better than her previous season-low round of 75. Centenary sophomore Jessica Garza (McKinney, Texas) stands tied for 31st in the tournament with a round of 77 Monday. Sophomore Jessica Garza took the individual tournament championship Tuesday to lead the Ladies. Keyed by Garza’s round of 76 Tuesday, the Ladies captured the tournament crown by 19 strokes, shooting a two-round team score of 664 (334-330). Centenary, serving as tournament hosts on the par-71 course at the Shreveport Country Club, finished with three players in the top 10, winning their first tournament of the 2006-07 season. Starting the day in third place and trailing by four strokes, Garza shot 1-over on the back nine to capture her second collegiate tournament. The McKinney, Texas, native picked up her game on the final five holes of Tuesday’s round, recording two birdies on the final two holes. In total, Garza played the final five holes at 2-under. On the final hole of the tournament, the sophomore holed out a chip shot from the back edge of the green for a birdie-3. With her approach shot going over the pin, Garza had 20 feet with little green to work with for the chip-in. Asked what she was trying to do on the chip shot, Garza replied she was just trying to get the ball close to the hole. Shasta Averyhardt of Jackson State, the overall leader heading into final round, shot an 83 Tuesday to finish in second place, three strokes behind Garza. In an up-and-down round Tuesday, Centenary junior Chloe’ Mims (Texarkana, Texas) finished in fourth place with a two-round total of 162 (80-82). With the Ladies starting off the Spring season with a bang, junior Chloe’ Mims (Texarkana, Texas) and sophomore Jessica Garza (McKinney, Texas) stand second and third, respectively, after the first round. Mims shot 40 on both the front and back nine to card an 80 in the first round, trailing tournament leader Shasta Averyhardt of Jackson State by three strokes. Averyhardt shot a 6-over 77 in the first round to stand as the overall leader. Garza, who led the Ladies with an 80.6 scoring average in the Fall, finished with a round of 81 Monday. After shooting 42 on the front nine, Garza shot 39 on the final nine holes to stand third. Sophomore Tracy Williams (Van Alstyne, Texas) shot 40 on the back nine, standing fifth overall with a score of 83 in the first round. Defeating the Kangaroos, 342-350, the Ladies were led by the play of sophomore Tracy Williams (Van Alstyne, Texas) in the dual match Sunday. While getting a gage of the course, with the same pin placements as Monday’s and Tuesday’s rounds, Williams shot an 83 to lead Centenary in Sunday’s round. Freshman Brittany Blackwell (Colleyville, Texas) had the second-best score of any Centenary player against UMKC, shooting an 85 in Sunday’s round. Junior Chloe’ Mims (Texarkana, Texas) and sophomore Jessica Garza (McKinney, Texas) both shot 87 Sunday in their first rounds of competition in the Spring season. Sophomore Leigh Newton (Edmonton, Alberta) rounded out the five Ladies competing on the team side, shooting a 94 Sunday. In Tuesday’s final round, the Ladies shot 320, improving on Monday’s first-round score by one stroke and setting a new season-low score in the second round. Sophomore Jessica Garza (McKinney, Texas/McKinney North) shot 78 Tuesday, for a total of 157 (79-78) to tie for 37th place. Garza was followed by fellow-sophomore Leigh Newton (Edmonton, Alberta/Strathcona Composite) , who shot 81 in Tuesday’s final round. Newton finished tied for 48th in the tournament, carding a 78 in Monday’s round. Freshman Brittany Blackwell (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) shot a new season-low Tuesday, shooting a final-round score of 80. With a tournament score of 162, Blackwell finished in a tie for 55th. The Ladies shot a team score of 338 in Tuesday’s final round. Played at the RidgePointe Country Club (par 72, 6,032), in Jonesboro, Ark., Centenary shot 1,012 (333-341-338) over the two-day, 54-hole event. Carding a 6-over 80 in the final round, the Ladies were led by sophomore Leigh Newton (Edmonton, Alberta/Strathcona Composite) Tuesday. Newton finished in a tie for 76th, completing her best three-round total of the season, with rounds of 86-85-80 (251). The high finisher for Centenary was junior Chloe’ Mims (Texarkana, Texas/Pleasant Grove) , who shot an 84 in Tuesday’s final round. Mims shot a three-round total of 244 (75-85-84), tying her season-low round of 3-over 75 in Monday’s opening 18. Oral Roberts won the event with a score of 914 (307-299-308), defeating first-day leaders Arkansas-Little Rock (298-304-314) by two strokes. Sara Wikstrom, who was tied for the lead after 36 holes, took the individual title, shooting a 3-over 75 Tuesday. Wikstrom finished the tournament with an even-par 216, shooting rounds of 69-72-75 en route to her second tournament win of the season. Files associated with this release: Lady Indian Classic First Day Scores Mims shot a 3-over 75 in the first round Monday to lead Centenary JONESBORO, Ark. -- The Centenary women’s golf team stands 19th after two rounds in the ASU Lady Indian Classic, played at the RidgePoint Country Club. Shooting a team score of 674 (333-334) after 36 holes, the Ladies were led by junior Chloe’ Mims (Texarkana, Texas/Pleasant Grove) in Monday’s two rounds. Mims, who stands tied for 39th, shot a two-round total of 160 (75-85), carding a 3-over 75 in the first round. Leading the individual competition, Molly Schermm of Northern Iowa and Sara Wikstrom of Arkansas-Little Rock stand tied for first with a score of 3-under 144. Wikstrom, carding 69-72 in the two rounds, helped Arkansas-Little Rock stand atop of the team leaderboard, with a team score of 602 (298-304). Files associated with this release: Final Round Scores Mims shot the low round for the Ladies Tuesday TULSA, Okla. -- The Centenary women’s golf team shot a season-low 313 in the final round to finish 12th in the 2006 ORU Shootout, played at Meadowbrook Country Club (par 72, 6082 yds.), in Tulsa, Okla., Tuesday. The Ladies finished with a 54-hole team score of 978 (327-338-313). The 313 shot in the final round was 14 strokes better than the previous season-low for Centenary, shot in the first round of the ORU Shootout Monday. Leading the Ladies in the Tuesday’s final round was junior Chloe’ Mims (Texarkana, Texas/Pleasant Grove) , shooting a season-low 3-over 75 to finish in a tie for 34th. Mims finished with a three-round, 54-hole total of 240, eclipsing her season-low score by 16 strokes (256). Sophomore Tracy Williams (Van Alstyne, Texas/Van Alstyne) was the high finisher for Centenary, finishing in a tie for 25th with a score of 238. Williams shot rounds of 76-81-81 over the three rounds. Sophomore Jessica Garza (McKinney, Texas/McKinney North) and freshman Mary Kate Byrne (Natchez, Miss./Natchez Cathedral) both shot 79 in the final round. Closing out the competitors for the Ladies, sophomore Leigh Newton (Edmonton, Alberta/Strathcona Composite) shot 80 in Tuesday’s third round. Missouri State finished with a team score of 913 (312-305-296) to capture the team title. The Bears, which held the lead after Monday’s 36 holes, shot a tournament-low 8-over 296 Tuesday, led by Sally Hinton’s 3-under 69. UTEP’s Gerina Mendoza captured the individual title, carding a 2-under 214 over the three rounds. Mendoza shot a 1-over 73 in Tuesday, winning by five strokes over Hinton (219). Led by sophomore Tracy Williams (Van Alstyne, Texas/Van Alstyne) , Centenary shot 327-337 over the two rounds Monday, shooting a season-low 327 in the first round. Williams, standing tied for 18th, shot a season-low 4-over 76 in the first round, carding an 80 in the second round Monday. Behind Williams, junior Chloe’ Mims (Texarkana, Texas/Pleasant Grove) stands tied for 48th after the first two rounds, firing rounds of 82-83. Missouri State holds the overall lead in the team competition with a score of 617 (312-305). The Bears hold a one-stroke advantage over tournament-hosts Oral Roberts (306-312 = 618). Gerina Mendoza of UTEP is the individual leader after shooting rounds of 70-71 for a score of 3-under 141. McNeese State won the team title with a score of 916 (313-297-306), defeating tournament host Louisiana-Monroe (921) by five strokes. Individually, sophomore Jessica Garza (McKinney, Texas/McKinney North) led Centenary with a three-round total of 240, finishing in a tie for 24th. Junior Chloe’ Mims (Texarkana, Texas/Pleasant Grove) tied for 40th, with a 54-hole score of 252. Angela Drane of Louisiana-Monroe was the event medalist at 2-over (74-69-75). Shooting rounds of 337-336 Monday, the Ladies were led by sophomore Jessica Garza (McKinney, Texas/McKinney North) , who is tied for 20th place after 36 holes. Garza shot rounds of 78-81=159. In the team competition, Louisiana-Monroe and McNeese State stand tied for first place after Monday, both with a score of 610. Angela Drane of Louisiana-Monroe is the individual leader, shooting 74-69=143. Drane is the only player in the competition to be under par after two rounds, shooting 1-under.
