Women's Soccer Opens 2006 Season Sunday

SHREVEPORT, La. - Head coach Chase Wooten and the Ladies soccer program begin the 2006 season Sunday against Sam Houston State at Mayo Field at 2 p.m.

The 15th season of Centenary women’s soccer returns 12 letterwinners from 2005, led by junior Bre Fletcher (Schertz, Texas/Samuel Clemens). The forward led the Ladies in goals, assists and points last season, tallying 15 points on five goals and five assists.

Finishing fourth on the team in points last season, sophomore Lauren Stanley (Mesquite, Texas/Poteet) returns in the midfield for Centenary. The midfielder scored two goals -- both game-winners -- and added an assist for five points in 2005.

On the backline, the Ladies return senior defender Lauren Mills (Austin, Texas/James Bowie), who earned second team All-Mid-Continent Conference accolades last season. Mills played in all 19 games in 2005, collecting two points from the defender position.

Junior Ali Hilsher (Tulsa, Okla./Washington) led the Mid-Con in saves (142) in 2005 and returns at the goalkeeper position. Hilsher ended the season with a 1.63 goals-against average and a .877 save percentage.

Heading into its fourth season as a program, Sam Houston State returns nine starters from last season’s team that finished with a 5-12-1 record.

Leading the returners for the Bearkats is sophomore midfielder Raquel Bueno. Scoring a team-high six goals in 2005, the sophomore was named to the 2006 preseason All-Southland Conference team, earning MVP of the Southland Conference Tournament last season. Bueno led Sam Houston State with three game-winning goals in 2005.

Junior midfielder Yoanna Garcia also returns for the Bearkats this season. Garcia tied for the team lead in assists (3) last season, adding a goal for five points in 18 games.

Senior goalkeeper Melissa Sauceda started all 18 games in net last season, ending the year with a 2.27 goals-against average and a .802 save percentage.

In the first meeting between the two teams, played Sept. 2, 2005 in Huntsville, Texas, Centenary captured a 1-0 win over Sam Houston State on a Fletcher goal in the 78th minute.
