SHREVEPORT—The Centenary volleyball team played well on the opening day of the Econo Lodge Centenary Volleyball Classic, but was forced to settle for a split after defeating Jackson State 3-0 (30-21, 30-23, 30-17) and falling to Nicholls State 3-1 (27-30, 30-26, 31-33, 20-30).

Centenary (1-4) looked impressive against Jackson State (0-2) in the early match as the team hit at a .309 percentage collectively. The Ladies were in control from the get go and turned in a well-rounded effort as the Maroon and White compiled three blocks and 40 digs on defense to add to 12 aces from the service game.

Individually, sophomore Danielle Bochat (Boerne, Texas) led the way with 13 kills while fellow classmate Ashlee Freeman (Houston, Texas) chipped in with 12 kills of her own. Freshman libero Lauren Fielding (Plano, Texas) paced the Ladies with 12 digs while junior setter Lindsay Bekelja (League City, Texas) contributed 43 assists and 11 digs to the win. Sophomore Rebecca Lunceford (Baton Rouge, La.) proved to be an offensive force as she pounded down six kills on only 10 attempts and freshman Christina Nichols (Katy, Texas) fired off a season-high six aces in the match.

The final game of the day against Southland Conference foe Nicholls State (3-3) was a hard fought match for both teams. The two teams battled back and forth with both squads alternating leads throughout the first three games before the Colonels pulled away in the fourth and final game of the contest. When it was all said and done, the experience of the upperclassmen on the Nicholls State roster was enough to provide the win to the visitors.

“We made some mistakes out there tonight, but young teams do that,” said Centenary head coach Jenny Hazelwood. “Overall, I am pleased with the effort we put forth tonight and I am encouraged by the growth that is taking place within our team right now.”

Nicholls State received 39 combined kills from senior Atina Porter and junior Kindra Halverson, 26 of those from Porter alone. All total, the Colonels dug 15 more balls than the Ladies and used those extra chances to claim 18 more kills.

Freshman Sarah Chambers (Plano, Texas) led the Maroon and White with 14 kills in the loss while Bochat (11 kills), Freeman, and Lunceford (9 kills apiece) had productive outings as well. Fielding again led the Ladies with 15 digs and Bochat picked up the team’s first double double on the season with 13 digs of her own. Nichols added two more aces to give her eight for the day.

The Ladies will conclude play in the Econo Lodge Centenary Volleyball Classic when they host Central Arkansas (2-3) at 1 p.m. and Southern (0-2) at 7 p.m. on Saturday in the Gold Dome.
