SHREVEPORT, La. -- The Centenary men’s soccer team (1-1-0) faces one of its toughest tests of the season, traveling to nationally-ranked South Carolina (2-1-0) for a 6 p.m. game at Stone Stadium, in Columbia, S.C., Tuesday.

Facing the Gamecocks for the first time in program history, the Gents look to build on their 2-0 win over Belhaven in their last game.

Scoring goals for Centenary in the win were juniors Aaron Volanski (Magnolia, Texas/Memphis) and Dustin Forward (Katy, Texas/Katy Taylor).

Forward currently leads the Gents in points with three from his defender position.

Behind Forward in points are Volanski and Aron Taylor (Calgary, Alberta/Western Canada), both with two points.

Playing a very important role Tuesday will be the play of goalkeeper Donnie Henderson (Houston/Westfield). Coming off a shutout against Belhaven, making five saves, Henderson has a 1.03 goals-against average and a .818 save percentage in two starts this season.

Defeating William and Mary, 1-0, over the weekend, South Carolina has shutout its last two opponents, earning a 2-0 win over Wofford, Aug. 28.

Earning both of the shutouts and starting all three games in net for the Gamecocks is sophomore Mike Gustavson. The 2005 Conference USA Freshman of the Year and a 2006 preseason All-Conference USA selection has a 1.33 goals-against average and a .667 save percentage, with his lone loss coming to nationally-ranked Clemson, Aug. 25.

Leading South Carolina in scoring is sophomore David Smith, who has two goals and an assist for five points from his midfielder position.

Standing second on the team in points is senior forward Mike Sambursky. With a goal and four points, Sambursky leads the Gamecocks with 11 shots in three games, scoring the game-winning goal over William and Mary Saturday. Sambursky entered the season in high regard, being named Conference USA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

Following Tuesday’s game with the Gamecocks, Centenary returns home to Mayo Field to host the Centenary Invitational Friday and Saturday.
