FORT WORTH, Texas—The Centenary volleyball team opened play in the Nike/LaQuinta Invitational hosted by TCU on Friday with a 3-0 loss to Ole Miss. The Ladies hung tough with the Rebels from the mighty Southeastern Conference and snagged the lead on more than one occasion before eventually falling 21-30, 15-30, 27-30.

Centenary (2-6) grabbed the first several points in the opening game and held a four-point lead at 13-9 before Ole Miss called a timeout. The move by head coach Joe Getzin paid off as the Rebels responded with three quick points on two kills from Kristen Carroll. Ole Miss then steadied itself, regrouped, and closed out the game by taking advantage of Centenary’s struggling serve-receive passing.

Ole Miss (6-2) continued to prey on the Ladies poor passing and jumped out to a 13-5 lead as the Maroon and White were unable to set up a consistent offensive attack. The Rebels cruised to the easy game two win with Carroll again leading the way.

Centenary stepped up its defense and the passing came around in the third game. The Ladies got a lot of touches on block attempts and were able to come up with some key digs along the way. After Centenary tied the game at 10 apiece, Ole Miss answered with a run that would stake the Ladies at a five-point deficit (18-13). Centenary would not give in though and rallied back to within two at 18-16. The two teams then matched each other the rest of the way and the score sat at 29-27 in favor of Ole Miss before the match ended on a Centenary attack error.

"I am pleased with the progress we made today," said head coach Jenny Hazelwood. "We showed improvement in the areas we've been working hard at in practice."

Sophomore Ashlee Freeman (Houston, Texas/Bellaire HS) led the Ladies with nine kills. Freshman Lauren Fielding (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior HS) collected a match-high 21 digs while sophomore Danielle Bochat (Boerne, Texas/Boerne HS) tallied 16 digs in the loss. Junior Lindsay Bekelja (League City, Texas/Clear Creek HS) recorded a double double on 23 assists and 10 digs.

Carroll finished with 11 kills for Ole Miss. Katie Kramer led all attackers with 17 kills on the evening while Lauren Moffett pounded down 13 kills without an error on 26 attempts.

Centenary will face the host TCU Horned Frogs at 1 p.m. on Saturday before wrapping up the tournament with a 7 p.m. match with Davidson.
