SHREVEPORT—The Centenary volleyball team grabbed a pair of wins on Monday evening in the Gold Dome. The Ladies easily dismissed Alcorn State 3-0 (30-24, 30-22, 30-22) in the first match of the doubleheader before coming from behind to defeat Mississippi Valley State 3-1 (24-30, 30-25, 30-26, 30-18) in the nightcap.

Centenary (4-8) hit the ball well all evening and collected 102 kills on the night. Sophomore Danielle Bochat (Boerne, TX/Boerne) led the way in match one with 15 kills while sophomore Ashlee Freeman (Houston, TX/Bellaire) added 13 kills of her own in the win.

Game one went back and forth in the early going and Alcorn took the lead at 18-16 on a Ladies service error. Centenary battled back behind Bochat and Freeman and received two big kills from sophomore Rebecca Lunceford (Baton Rouge, LA/The Dunham) School). The Ladies then capitalized on several attack errors by Alcorn State to take the game.

Game two followed the same pattern as the Ladies found themselves down 17-14 before making their move behind five service aces, two from junior Lindsay Bekelja (League City, TX/Clear Creek). The strong service game kept the Lady Braves from setting up an offense and Centenary pulled away for the win. The Maroon and White dominated game three while hitting .316 as a team as Freeman and Bochat combined for 11 kills to claim the match.

Mississippi Valley State (5-4) came into their match with the Ladies riding a five-game win streak and the momentum showed in game one. Centenary held the lead almost exclusively for over half the game before Lily Latu served seven straight points for the Devilettes with the help of two kills from Ashley Robinson. With MVSU holding the advantage at 26-21, the Ladies ran off three points but could not overcome the deficit in dropping the game.

It had been 22 matches since Centenary had come back to win a match in which it had lost the opening game, but the Ladies were determined to end that streak on Monday. The Maroon and White raced out to a 9-4 lead in game two behind two aces from freshman Lauren Fielding (Plano, TX/Plano Senior) and another by Freeman. MVSU battled back to tie the game at 16-16 before six attack errors handed the game to the Ladies.

A kill by freshman Sarah Chambers (Plano, TX/Plano West) and two more aces pushed Centenary’s game three lead out to 6-1 before the Devilettes called a timeout. The Ladies would then use a balanced attack of freshman Rebekah Hill (Carthage, TX/Carthage), Freeman, and Lunceford who each tallied three kills apiece to pull away for the win.

The Maroon and White came out focused to end the match in four games and quickly earned another 6-1 advantage to start play. The Ladies kept the pressure on MVSU and rode the arm of Chambers (four kills) to easily close out the contest with a 30-18 game four victory.

Chambers finished with 14 kills to lead Centenary while Freeman pitched in with another 11 kills. Bekelja passed out 44 assists to go with her match one total of 40 dishes and Fielding pushed her double-digit digs streak to nine matches with 14 and 16 saves respectively. Freshman Christina Nichols (Katy, TX/Katy) and Bochat both contributed 11 digs in the finale. Sophomore Chevy White (Carthage, TX/Carthage) also recorded a season-high nine digs.

The Ladies will receive several days off before traveling to a tournament hosted by the University of New Orleans on Friday and Saturday. Centenary will take on UNO and Alabama-Birmingham at 12 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Friday before locking up with Northwestern State and Alcorn State on Saturday.
