SHREVEPORT, La. -- Opening the 2006 Mid-Continent Conference season, the Centenary women’s soccer team (2-6-0, 0-1-0 Mid-Con) lost a 1-0 encounter with IUPUI (4-2-1, 1-0-0 Mid-Con) Friday at Mayo Field.

Having multiple attacks on the Jaguars net in the second half, the Ladies were unable to capitalize and score the much-desired equalizing goal in the final moments of Friday’s contest.

A first-half goal by IUPUI sophomore Emily Hicks was enough to propel the Jaguars to the shutout victory, their third shutout of the season. As IUPUI junior Sheri Levack served a low cross into the Centenary box from the right flank, Hicks placed a shot into the right side-netting of the goal, giving the Jaguars the 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.

The Ladies had several attacking opportunities in the final 20 minutes of the second half, however Centenary could not produce the final pass in the IUPUI penalty area for the game-tying goal. Freshman Brittany O’Neal (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches) and junior Bre Fletcher (Schertz, Texas/Samuel Clemens) had scoring chances that were just off of the mark in the second half of the contest.

Shots were in favor of the Jaguars, 11-9, in the game, with freshman Jamie Farrell, this week’s Mid-Con Defensive Player of the Week, making two saves for her second shutout of the season.

Centenary goalkeeper Ali Hilsher (Tulsa, Okla./Washington), who stifled several attacks by picking off numerous IUPUI crosses, made five saves in the loss.

Centenary next plays Arkansas State at Mayo Field, hosting the non-conference opponent Sunday at 1 p.m.
