CEDAR CITY, Utah -- Two goals by Shaley Ipson led Southern Utah University (2-5-1, 1-0-1 Mid-Con) to a 4-1 win over the Centenary women’s soccer team (3-7-0, 0-2-0 Mid-Con) Thursday at Thunderbird Soccer Field, in Cedar City, Utah.

Ipson, a sophomore forward, scored her team-leading third and fourth goals of the season Thursday, helping the Thunderbirds to their first Mid-Continent Conference win of the season.

After junior Brooklyn Phillips scored in the eighth minute to give Southern Utah an early 1-0 lead, Ipson scored with less than five minutes remaining in the first half, increasing the lead to two goals just before intermission.

With momentum on their side after Ipson’s late goal in the first half, Southern Utah struck quickly after the halftime to build a 3-0 lead.

Just over a minute into the second half, Ipson followed up her own shot to knock the rebound past Centenary goalkeeper Kate Donnelly (Seabrooke, Texas/Clear Lake). After taking a shot from just inside the Ladies penalty area, Ipson beat the Centenary defense to the loose ball to score her fourth goal of the season in the 47th minute.

Freshman Laura Goodrich would add a fourth goal for Southern Utah in the 57th minute.

Scoring the lone goal for Centenary in the loss was sophomore Lauren Stanley (Mesquite, Texas/Poteet), who scored her first goal of the 2006 season. Stanley beat Thunderbird goalkeeper Holly Davis with a deflected shot inside the Southern Utah box in the 56th minute.

Shots were in favor of the Thurnderbirds, 21-13, in the contest. Davis and sophomore Sutton Cherrington combined for six saves in the win.

Junior Ali Hilsher (Tulsa, Okla./Washington), who received the start in net for the Ladies, and Donnelly combined for five saves.

Centenary travels to Orem, Utah Saturday for a non-conference game against Utah Valley State at 2 p.m.
