Robbs scored her fifth goal
of the season Wednesday

SHREVEPORT, La. -- Freshman Stefani Robbs scored with less than five minutes remaining in regulation to lead the Centenary women’s soccer team (4-8-0) to a 2-1 win over Louisiana Tech (4-4-2) Wednesday at Mayo Field.

Deadlocked at 1-1 with overtime steadily approaching, Robbs broke open in the Louisiana Tech box to finish a low cross from freshman Brittany O’Neal (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches). Off a turnover deep in the Lady Techsters’ defensive third, O’Neal raced alone towards the net, chased by retreating Louisiana Tech players. With defenders staggered across the goal line to defend against the open net, O’Neal laid the ball across the box from the endline to an oncoming Robbs. Robbs quickly placed a first-time hit into the top of the net for the game-winning goal in the 86th minute, her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Both Robbs and O’Neal had been slowed by injuries earlier this season, however the two freshman, along with the rest of the underclassmen on the Ladies, continue to grow, according to Centenary head coach Chase Wooten.

"Our younger players are growing every single game and we’ve taken some steps backwards," Wooten said. "(Wednesday) we created some chances in the second half and we were getting better as the game went on."

Wooten noted that his team must have better starts, as Centenary fell behind less than 10 minutes into the contest Wednesday.

In the eighth minute, Louisiana Tech sophomore Savanna Russo ran onto a loose ball just outside the Centenary penalty area, hitting a high shot off the right post and into the goal.

Despite the early goal, Centenary came dangerously close to scoring the equalizing goal in the 23rd minute when sophomore Lauren Stanley (Mesquite, Texas/Poteet) touched the ball past Louisiana Tech goalkeeper Jill Medigovich. As the ball rolled towards the goal line, Louisiana Tech was able to recover and clear the ball out of the area to maintain the 1-0 lead.

Trailing by a goal entering the second half, the Ladies got on the board when Stanley redirected a cross by freshman Kristine Weaver (Prosper, Texas/Prosper), heading the ball over Medigovich. As Medigovich made a play on the Weaver cross, Stanley flicked the ball high and over Medigovich for her second goal of the season, tying the game at 1-1.

The two teams exchanged several scoring opportunities following Stanley’s goal in the 50th minute, leading to Robbs late goal to win the game for the Ladies.

Winning her fourth game of the season, junior Ali Hilsher (Tulsa, Okla./Washington) made five saves for the Ladies. Hilsher kept the game tied at 1-1 midway through the second half, stopping a free kick by Russo in the 75th minute. Twenty yards away from the net, Russo aimed high with the direct kick, which was tipped over the crossbar by a diving Hilsher.

Medigovich made four saves for Louisiana Tech in the loss.

Shots were in favor of the Lady Techsters, 15-13.

Playing its only game of the week, Centenary closed out the non-conference portion of the 2006 schedule Wednesday against Louisiana Tech. The Ladies next play Oct. 6, visiting Oakland University for a pivotal Mid-Continent Conference game.
