Silvas leads the Gents in scoring
against Conference USA teams

SHREVEPORT, La. -- The Centenary men’s soccer team (3-8-0) travels to Birmingham, Ala. for a Wednesday game against UAB (5-4-1) at West Campus Field. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

The Gents enter Wednesday’s contest with a 2-1-0 record in their last three games, defeating Valpariaso (Sept. 23) and Tulsa (Sept. 26).

Starting in net for all three of those games for the Gents, junior James Speed (Corpus Christi, Texas/King) has earned a shutout and has a 1.00 goals-against average over the three-game stretch. Making 10 appearances this season, including six starts, Speed has a 2.87 goals-against average and a .604 save percentage this season.

Standing tied for fifth in the Mid-Continent Conference in goals, junior midfielder Aaron Volanski (Magnolia, Texas/Memphis) leads the Gents with eight points on four goals. Volanski leads the team with 23 shots, standing eighth in the conference.

Among the conference leaders in goals by a freshman, forward Stephen Rifai (Spring, Texas/Klein) stands second on the Gents with three goals and seven points this season.

Regionally-ranked UAB enters Wednesday coming off a 2-0 loss to national-power South Carolina Sept. 27.

Leading the Blazers with five goals and 14 points, senior Jerson Monteiro stands fourth in Conference USA in both points and goals. This season, Monteiro has scored the game-winning goal in two of UAB’s five wins.

Leading UAB with 22 shots, senior forward Lukasz Kwapisz stands second on the Blazers with 10 points on five goals. Kwapisz registered the game-winner in UAB’s last win, defeating Marshall, 2-1, Sept. 23.

In goal, senior Jeremy Drake has started nine of 10 games this season, credited with two shutouts. Drake has a 1.63 goals-against average and a .754 save percentage.

Centenary holds a 1-2-0 record against teams from Conference USA this season, defeating Tulsa in their last contest against the conference.

In three games against Conference USA opponents, sophomore Gabriel Silvas (Euless, Texas/Hartwick) leads the Gents with three points (1 goal, 1 assist).
