Sam Robinson has two goals in
Mid-Con games this season

SHREVEPORT, La. -- The Centenary men’s soccer team (4-9-0, 2-2-0) hosts conference-leading Western Illinois (8-6-0, 3-0-0) in a Mid-Continent Conference game at Mayo Field Saturday. Kickoff between the two teams is set for 3 p.m.

With a 2-2-0 record and six points in Mid-Con games this season, the Gents stand tied for second in the conference standings after four conference games.

Continuing to lead Centenary in scoring, junior Aaron Volanski (Magnolia, Texas/Memphis) has five goals and 11 points in 13 starts this season. The midfielder remains among the conference leaders in points and goals, leading the Mid-Con in points and goals in conference games. In four Mid-Con games, Volanski has three goals and seven points to stand statistically atop of the Mid-Con.

Freshman Stephen Rifai (Spring, Texas/Klein) stands second on the Gents with nine points (four goals, 1 assist). Rifai, a forward, stands tied for third in the conference in goals in Mid-Con games (2), tied for fifth in the conference in points in Mid-Con games (5).

Freshman Sam Robinson (Houston/Cy-Fair) stands tied for third on the Gents with two goals and four points, scoring both of his goals in conference games this season.

Starting eight games in net, junior goalkeeper James Speed (Corpus Christi, Texas/King) has a 2.53 goals-against average and a .686 save percentage in 12 appearances. Speed leads the Mid-Con in saves in conference games (22), averaging 5.50 saves per game in four Mid-Con games this season.

As a team, the Gents have won their last two games at Mayo Field, outscoring opponents, 6-3, in wins over Valparaiso (Sept. 23) and UMKC (Oct. 7).

Western Illinois enters this weekend’s game with the Gents coming off a 1-0 loss to Northern Illinois Sunday.

This season, the Leathernecks have impressively shut out seven of their 14 opponents, leading the conference with a 0.70 team goals-against average.

Leading the conference in goals-against average, save percentage, saves and shutouts, freshman Stephen Paterson has started 13 of 14 games this season for Western Illinois. With five shutouts to his credit, Paterson has a 0.76 goals-against average and a .859 save percentage. Paterson stands 12th in the NCAA in save percentage, leading the Mid-Con with 61 saves this season.

Offensively, freshman Martin Browne leads the Mid-Con with eight goals and 20 points, helping the Leathernecks to one of the most potent offenses in the NCAA with a 2.00 goals per game average. Browne, a forward, has three game-winning goals this season, taking 38 shots in 14 games.

Also scoring three game-winning goals, senior forward Matt Wieclaw stands second on Western Illinois with six goals and 15 points. Wieclaw stands tied for the Mid-Con lead with three goals and seven points in three conference games this season.

The Leathernecks captured a 4-1 win over Centenary last season, played Oct. 29, 2005 in Macomb, Ill. Senior Nick Bohnenkamp had two goals, including the game-winner, leading Western Illinois to the three-goal win.
