SHREVEPORT, La. -- Five individual records were broken as the Centenary women’s swimming team opened the 2006-07 season defeating Arkansas-Little Rock Friday and Henderson State Saturday.

In a tri-meet against Ouachita Baptist and Arkansas-Little Rock Friday, Centenary defeated Little Rock by a score of 85-8, falling to Ouachita Baptist, 53-42.

In the season-opening meet, freshman Maggie Vaughan (Clinton, Miss./Clinton) set a new school record in both the 500-yard freestyle and the 1000-yard freestyle, winning both events against OBU and UALR.

Early in the meet, Vaughan broke the Centenary record for the 1000-yard freestyle by more than 30 seconds, finishing with a time of 10:34.58. Vaughan would follow that by setting a new record in the 500-yard freestyle, with a time of 5:13.18, breaking the mark of teammate Taryne Cantillo (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown).

Fellow-freshman Rebecca Loy (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound) also set a new school mark in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall with a time of 2:29.94 and breaking the record of teammate Lori Von Pingle (Jackson, Miss./Jackson Prep).

Also excelling in Friday’s meet was junior Melanie Zimmerman (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock), who won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.47. Freshman Natalie Nazzal (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) finished second in the 100-yard free with a time of 56.59, helping the Ladies capture the top two positions in the event.

Both Zimmerman and Nazzal were part of the 400-yard relay team, which captured the event with a time of 3:45.84. Joining the two on the relay team were sophomores Leslie Clampitt (Dallas/Highland Park) and Alana Gregory (Dallas/Hillcrest).

In Saturday’s meet against Henderson State, the Ladies captured five events en route to a 103-100 win over the Lady Reddies.

Setting new school records for the Ladies was Loy and freshman Leslie Wyatt (Greenwood Village, Colo./Cherry Creek).

Loy took second in the 100-yard breaststroke, breaking the mark of sophomore Betsy Smith (Shreveport/Loyola College Prep) with a time of 1:10.77.

Wyatt won the 400-yard individual medley with a record-setting time of 4:43.24, breaking the mark of Cantillo, set Dec. 3, 2005.

Cantillo took the 200-yard freestyle against Henderson State, winning the event with a time of 2:00.09.

Also winning for the Ladies Saturday were Vaughan and Clampitt. Clampitt won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56:07, while Vaughan completed a weekend sweep of the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle, winning both events against Henderson State.

Centenary looks for continued success next weekend, as it hosts Arkansas-Little Rock and New Orleans at the Fitness Center Oct. 28.
