SHREVEPORT—The Centenary volleyball team looks to stay in the hunt for a spot in the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament when it hosts Valparaiso and Oakland in the Gold Dome this weekend. The Ladies take on Valpo on Friday at 7 p.m. before facing Oakland on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Centenary (10-19, 1-6 Mid-Con) went 2-2 last week with wins over Alcorn State (3-0) and Chicago State (3-0), both on the road. The Ladies were unable to hold a 2-0 lead against Air Force, narrowly missing their third win (2-3) within a five-day stretch. IUPUI defeated the Maroon and White (3-0) on Friday in the only conference match-up last week.

Danielle Bochat (Boerne, Texas/Boerne) leads the Ladies with 268 kills and Ashlee Freeman (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) is second with 223. Freeman also places second on the team with 70 total blocks, just two back of Rebecca Lunceford’s (Baton Rouge, La./The Dunham School) 72 blocks.

Lindsay Bekelja (League City, Texas/Clear Creek) has passed out 934 assists as Centenary’s setter and now sits comfortably on top the school’s career list (3,352) by almost 2,000 assists with a year of eligibility remaining. The record-setting continues as Lauren Fielding (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) has collected 473 digs already with seven matches left in her freshman campaign. That total already places her second for most digs in a single-season and the libero needs just 73 more (an average of 10.4 per match) to claim the mark (546, Kelley Heckman, 2002). To this point, Fielding has been averaging 16.3 digs per match.

Valparaiso (15-9, 5-2 Mid-Con) sits in third place in the league standings behind the play of Angie Porche. Porche has 298 kills on the year for an average of 3.59 per game. Brittany Marks has been the defensive anchor for the Crusaders with 466 digs while Sara Hughes drives the offense with 957 assists. Valpo defeated the Ladies 3-0 in Indiana earlier this season.

Oakland (1-19, 0-7 Mid-Con) has struggled throughout the season and has yet to score a victory in Mid-Con play. Leah Dupuie leads the Golden Grizzlies with 151 kills (2.36 per game). Monica Frechen is second on the squad with 122 kills and leads the team with 63 blocks. Centenary defeated Oakland 3-1 on the road in the first meeting between the teams this year.
