in Saturday's season finale

MACOMB, Ill. -- Five first-half goals led Western Illinois (10-7-0, 3-3-0) to a 6-0 victory over the Centenary women’s soccer team (4-11-1, 0-5-1) Saturday at MacKenzie Alumni Field, on the campus of Western Illinois.

In a span of six minutes in the opening half, the Westerwinds exploded for four goals, led by a goal and two assists by sophomore Ashley Hoch. With two assists in Saturday’s win, Hoch broke the Western Illinois career record for assists, registering 14 assists in two seasons with the Westerwinds.

In the 18th minute, junior Bess Rapp started the scoring for Western Illinois, scoring her first of two goals in the contest.

Goals by Kim Schuneman and Misako Inaba followed Rapps opening goal, with Hoch scoring the final goal in the four-goal barrage.

Off of a pass from Caitlin Barrett, Hoch scored her third goal of the season in the 24th minute.

After Robyn Ruypers was taken down in the Centenary penalty area, senior defender Meghan Schlenker converted a penalty kick in the 33rd minute to extend the Western Illinois lead to five before halftime.

Maintaining the lead throughout the second half, Rapp added her second goal of the game in the 86th minute.

Samantha Clark and Julie Remes combined for the shutout for the Westerwinds, making two saves.

With the win, Western Illinois captured the fourth and final spot for next weekend’s Mid-Continent Conference Tournament.
