SHREVEPORT—The Centenary volleyball team cruised past Texas Southern 3-0 (30-27, 30-26, 30-23) on Thursday evening in the Gold Dome. Sophomore Rebecca Lunceford (Baton Rouge, La./The Dunham School) pounded down a season-high 18 kills and sophomore Ashlee Freeman (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) set a new school record for block assists in a season with 81.

Centenary (12-21) began the match slowly, but took a commanding lead in game one at 21-15 after back-to-back attack errors by Texas Southern, an ace by freshman Christina Nichols (Katy, Texas/Katy), and a kill from Lunceford. The Lady Tigers pushed for several points and tied the score at 26-26 before consecutive kills by freshmen Rebekah Hill (Carthage, Texas/Carthage) and Sarah Chambers (Plano, Texas/Plano West) gave the Ladies the 30-27 win.

Texas Southern (5-17) fell behind 7-2 to Centenary in the opening moments of game two but grabbed the lead at 19-15 on seven straight points thanks to six Ladies attack errors. The Maroon and White regrouped and rode the arm of Lunceford, who spiked four of the next five points, to carry the home team to the 30-26 victory.

The final game was all Centenary as the Ladies fired out to a 13-4 advantage on three Freeman aces and three more thunderous kills from Lunceford. Texas Southern would not recover in falling 30-23.

Sophomore Danielle Bochat (Boerne, Texas/Boerne) notched her ninth double double of the season with 12 kills and a match-high 20 digs for the Ladies. Lunceford’s 18 kills came on 41 attempts and seven errors for a .268 hitting percentage.

Freeman used six block assists to claim the new record, surpassing her own mark of 78 during her freshman campaign and added nine kills on the night. Junior Lindsay Bekelja (League City, Texas/Clear Creek) passed out 41 assists and freshman Lauren Fielding (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) defensed 16 digs successfully to extend her double-digit dig streak to 30 matches. Sophomore Chevy White (Carthage, Texas/Carthage) contributed 10 digs to the win for Centenary.

The Ladies will conclude the home portion of their 2006 season on Friday at 7 p.m. when Mid-Con leading Oral Roberts (22-7, 9-0 Mid-Con) comes to the Gold Dome.
