DENTON, Texas -- The Centenary women’s swim team had a very competitive meet Friday’s against the University of North Texas and San Diego State, held at the Pohl Recreation Center.

Against San Diego State of the Mountain West Conference and host North Texas of the Sun Belt Conference, the Ladies performed strongly against good competition Friday, winning four events.

With Centenary and San Diego State not scored against, due to the two teams meeting at TCU Saturday, the Ladies faced a strong side from North Texas, eventually falling to the Mean Green. North Texas won nine of the 14 events Friday en route to its third victory of the season.

The Ladies were led in Friday’s meet by the duo of sophomore Taryne Cantillo (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown) and freshman Maggie Vaughan (Clinton, Miss./Clinton). Combined, the two swimmers captured four events, setting Centenary school records in two of those event wins.

Cantillo continues to perform strong in her respective events, winning both the 100 and 200 fly and narrowly breaking her own school record in the 100 fly. Coming within three-tenths of a second of breaking her record time in the 100 fly for the Ladies, Cantillo touched the wall with a time of 59.87 for the win. In the 200 fly, she held off two charging North Texas swimmers for the win, recording a time of 2:11.31, her best time of the 2006-07 season.

Vaughan took home the 500 free and 1,000 free in Friday’s meet, remaining undefeated and among the Mid-Continent Conference’s best in the two events. Breaking her own school record in the 1,000 free, Vaughan won the event with a time of 10:29.45, recording the best time of her young career. In the 500 free, Vaughan capped off a successful meet with a new school record of 5:07.60, winning the event and shattering her former mark of 5:10.38.

Setting season-best times for the 2006-07 season Friday were Nicole Turner (Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall), Kendra Norman (Power Springs, Ga./McEachern) and Jessica Brown (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound).

Turner had her best time in the 200 free with a time of 2:06.37, while Brown had her best time of the season in the 200 fly (2:21.41).

Norman had personal season-best times in the 200 breaststroke (2:38.38) and 200 individual medley (2:22.75).

In the final event of the evening, the team of freshmen Rebecca Simmons (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) and Natalie Nazzal (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood), along with sophomore Leslie Clampitt (Dallas/Highland Park) and junior Melanie Zimmerman (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock) took third in the 400 free relay, finishing with a time of 3:46.27.

The Ladies next travel to Fort Worth, Texas for Saturday’s meet against TCU and San Diego State, scheduled for a noon start.
