Women's Basketball Suffers 77-43 Loss to Birmingham-Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- A poor first half doomed the Centenary women’s basketball team (1-4) Friday at Bill Battle Coliseum, as the Ladies fell to tournament-hosts Birmingham-Southern (2-3), 77-43, in the 2006 Sheraton Roundball Classic.

In the opening half, Centenary committed a season-high 17 turnovers, scoring a season-low 17 points in the first half and trailing at the intermission, 44-17.

Aiding to the 27-point deficit at the half was the Ladies poor shooting, unable to convert open looks at the basket on numerous occasions down the court. Centenary shot 25.9 percent from the floor in the first half, a season-low shooting percentage for a half.

In the first half, Birmingham-Southern scored 17 points off of turnovers by the Ladies.

For a six-minute period in the opening half, both teams went cold from the floor. With the Lady Panthers leading 20-8 at the 13:36 mark of the first half, neither team was able to score a basket until the 7:03 mark when Centenary freshman guard Monique Jefferson (Birmingham, Ala.) hit a running layup to make the score 20-11.

Following Jefferson’s layup, the Ladies were outscored, 24-6, to close the half, having to play from behind for the remainder of the contest.

Having to overcome such a large deficit in the second half, the largest lead any opponent has held over Centenary thus far into the season after the first half, the Ladies could not come within 20 points of the host Lady Panthers, with Birmingham-Southern extending the lead to as much as 38 points in the second half.

With three Lady Panther players scoring in double figures, the Birmingham-Southern scoring onslaught was led by junior Keanna Vicks and senior Pam Thornborrow, both with 12 points in the game. Thornborrow, a 5-7 guard, went 5-for-8 from the floor in Friday’s win, dishing out five assists.

For the game, Birmingham-Southern scored 30 points off of Centenary turnovers.

Leading all players in scoring was Centenary senior forward Jelena Aleksic (Belgrade, Serbia), who scored 14 points on 7-of-27 shooting from the floor. Aleksic also led Centenary on the boards, collecting six rebounds in the loss.

Centenary continues play at the Sheraton Roundball Classic Saturday, facing Samford at Bill Battle Coliseum at 5 p.m. Playing in the earlier game Friday, Samford earned a 67-52 victory over Alabama A&M.
