BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Senior Veronica Pike led Samford (5-1) to a 60-36 win over the Centenary women’s basketball team (1-5) Saturday at the 2006 Sheraton Roundball Classic, played at Bill Battle Coliseum on the campus of Birmingham-Southern College.

Pike, a 6-foot-1 forward, ended the game with a game-high 18 points, scoring majority of her points in the interior and using her large frame to her advantage.

A strong change in attitude from the previous evening enabled the Ladies to stay within striking distance for majority of the first half, evidence by an increase in aggression on the defensive end and Centenary staying within 10 points until the waning moments of the opening half.

As the Ladies trailed 17-10 late in the first half, a three from the left corner by Bulldog junior Alex Munday gave Samford its first double-digit lead in the contest, building upon the 10-point lead with timely three-point shots.

Overall poor shooting from the floor by Centenary, coupled with Samford shooting 52.2 percent from the floor, led to a halftime deficit of 24 points for the Ladies.

Centenary shot 4-for-21 (19 percent) from the floor Saturday, its season low shooting percentage for a half this season.

As the second half began, Samford continued to pound the ball inside, sealing off the interior for close-range shots by Munday and Pike.

Although playing from behind following the half, the Ladies continued to battle for the remainder of the contest, chipping away at the large Samford lead, however Centenary could not overcome the large deficit.

Senior forward Jelena Aleksic (Belgrade, Serbia) led the Ladies in scoring with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor.

For the game, the Ladies shot 27.5 percent from the floor, going 3-for-15 from beyond the arc.

Following the contest, Aleksic was named to the 2006 Sheraton Roundball Classic All-Tournament Team, leading Centenary in scoring for both its games this weekend.

In a weekend in which nothing seemed to go its way, Centenary looks to get back on track when it travels to Northwestern State Tuesday. Testing the true character of the Ladies, Centenary looks to break a three-game losing streak in Tuesday’s contest.
