SHREVEPORT—The Centenary men’s basketball team allowed UALR to shoot an astounding 66.7 percent from the field in the first half, but turned up the defense and tired out its opponent in the second half to claim a 69-59 victory. The Gents held the Trojans to just 29.6 percent from the field in the final period and used a 12-2 run over a six-minute span to pull away Thursday in the Gold Dome.

Centenary (3-4) fell behind 10-3 early as UALR went on a 10-0 run after Tyrone Hamilton opened the game with a three-point play for the Gents. The Maroon and White answered back with a 15-0 surge on a pair of buckets by Larry Logan and back-to-back treys from Hamilton to go on top 18-10 halfway through the first stanza.

UALR (4-4) came storming back again behind its sizzling shooting performance and the lead see-sawed back and forth over the final six minutes before the break. A steal by Byron Ray and a jumper from Rashad Moss allowed the Trojans to grab the halftime lead at 34-32.

The exceptional shooting performance would not continue over the final 20 minutes of play for the visiting Trojans. UALR converted on just 8-of-27 field goal attempts, including 2-of-14 from long distance in the second half while the Gents improved their shooting from 46.2 percent to 55 percent when it counted most.

A dunk by UALR’s Rashad Jones-Jennings 3:28 into the final half staked the Trojan’s to a four-point advantage at 40-36. It would be the last time the visitors in the black and grey uniforms would hold the lead as Centenary went on top at 42-41 on a bank shot by Jerrald Bonham and never looked back.

Four different Gents scored over a 10-2 run that blew open the game for good. The scoring flurry was capped by a bucket in the paint by Bryan Baumann. The guard was fouled on the play and made good on the free throw to push the score to 59-48 with 4:16 remaining.

Three players scored in double figures for UALR paced by De’Andre Eggins’ 18 points off the bench. Terrance Akins scored 12 points for the Trojans and Jones-Jennings added 11 points.

Hamilton led the victorious Gents with 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting and a perfect 5-of-5 effort from the free throw line. Logan chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds and Chase Adams finished with nine points.

Centenary will host Nicholls State in the Gold Dome on Saturday at 2 p.m. for the final contest of a three games in six days stretch. The Gents hold a 5-2 all-time lead over the Colonels.
