Gents Head out West to Tangle with Southern Utah

CEDAR CITY, Utah—The Centenary men’s basketball team looks to keep Southern Utah out of the Mid-Con win column when the Gents take on the Thunderbirds in Cedar City, Utah, on Saturday at 7:35 p.m. (MST). Centenary is 3-3 all-time against Southern Utah as each team is 2-1 on its home court against the other.


Centenary (7-11, 1-2) is coming off of its second heartbreaking conference loss in its last three games. The Gents used a solid second half effort to come from 19 points down to lose 80-75 at UMKC on Thursday after having a shot to take the lead with 1:48 remaining. Centenary won its previous game 64-58 over Western Illinois and dropped a close one before that 66-62 to Valparaiso in the final seconds.


The Gents top-rated offense at 71.2 ppg is led by Tyrone Hamilton’s scoring average of 16 ppg, which is fourth-best in the Mid-Con. The sophomore guard dropped in 24 points in the loss to UMKC. Senior Alexander Starr is also posting double figures at 12.3 ppg while senior Larry Logan is adding 11.4 ppg.


Southern Utah (10-7, 0-2 Mid-Con) entered the Mid-Con portion of its schedule with the best record in the league at 10-5, but since has lost its first two league tilts to UMKC and Oral Roberts. The Thunderbirds are the sharpest shooting team in the conference as they lead all members in both field goal percentage (48.5%) and three-point field goal percentage (40.7 percent).


Southern Utah is driven by guard Steve Barnes who is scoring 14.5 ppg, fifth best in the Mid-Con, and Justin Allen’s 11.3 ppg.
