Holli Wilkins led the Ladies
with 11 points Saturday

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- Centenary’s (4-13, 0-3) road woes continue, as the Ladies fell 63-53 to Southern Utah (4-11, 1-1) Saturday at Centrum Arena. Anne Westwood led the Thunderbirds with 19 points in Saturday’s game.

The effort was there for Centenary, however the result was not what the Ladies would have hoped for.

A back-and-forth first half between two evenly-matched teams ended with Southern Utah leading by a point at 26-25.

Scoring was spread out between the Ladies in the opening half, with seven players registering a point.

Neither team was able to pull away following the intermission, with the two teams playing within one-to-two possessions of each other for majority of the second half.

A three by Southern Utah would be answered by a three by Centenary. A basket inside by Centenary would be followed by a jumper by Southern Utah, and this would continue throughout the final half.

The difference came with less than five minutes remaining in the contest when Southern Utah would scored six unanswered points to take a 59-51 lead.

Second shots by the Thunderbirds was the thorn in the side of the Ladies in the game, according to head coach Steve Curtis.

"They got a lot of loose balls and they got a lot of second shots," Curtis said. "They’d get the ball, they’d pick it up and they’d make another shot from there. Where we’d get the ball, we’d have a chance to go down and make a play for ourselves."

Converting open looks at the basket, something Centenary unfortunately could not do in the final five minutes to the game, the Thunderbirds would not look back after the consecutive baskets.

After a three-pointer by Centenary junior Sara Judice (Lafayette, La./East Central CC) cut the lead to just two points at the 5:35 mark, baskets by Julie Stradling, Heather Hillock and Charmaine Piula gave the Thunderbirds what turned out to be an unrecoverable lead with a little over three minutes remaining.

Two free throws by Judice with 2:05 remaining would be the final points for the Ladies in the contest, unable to score in the final two minutes of the game.

Westwood turned out to be the player of the game for Southern Utah, having her way in the low block and scoring 12 points in the deciding half. Westwood added 14 rebounds for third double-double of the season.

With Judice’s 10 points, senior guard Holli Wilkins (Evadale, Texas/Evadale) scored 11 points, grabbing eight rebounds.

Sophomore Cierra Bush (Campti, La./Lakeview) grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds, scoring nine points.

For the game, Centenary shot 27.8 percent form the floor, compared to 35.9 percent for Southern Utah. A telling statistic and what may have decided the game, the Thunderbirds shot 50 percent for the second half to the Ladies 24.1 percent.

Centenary continues its two-game roadtrip at UMKC Monday, looking to break a streak of 10 losses in conference games.
