three event wins for the Gents

SHREVEPORT, La. -- The Centenary men’s swim team captured a win over Delta State University, defeating the Statesmen, 134-128, at the Centenary Fitness Center.

Needing a win in the 400 freestyle relay, final event of the meet, to earn the victory over the Statesmen, the team of Sam Hayes (Alexandria, La.), Bryan Myers (Round Rock, Texas), Chase Lambert (Benton, Ark.) and Dustin Myers (Round Rock, Texas) came through, winning the event with a time of 3:11.78.

With the meet on the line, Dustin Myers registered an anchor leg split of 48.46 to win the event for the Gents and capture the 11 points needed to surpass Delta State for the meet win.

Centenary won six events in Saturday’s meet against the Statesmen, led by three event wins by Hayes.

In addition to his part in helping the Gents win the 400 freestyle relay, Hayes captured individual event wins in both the 50 free and the 100 free. Competing in back-to-back events, Hayes won the 50 free with a time of 22.07, his best time of the 2006-07 season. In the following event, the freshman took the 100 free, registering a time of 48.47. For the meet, Hayes accounted for 33 points for the Gents.

Setting a new team record in the 200 individual medley, freshman Jamie Stults (Allen, Texas) touched the wall with a career-best time of 1:58.30, breaking the former Gents record of 1:58.46, set by Robert Trempski in the 2004-05 season.

Also registering wins for Centenary Saturday was freshman Cole McGee (Albuquerque, N.M.) and junior Kyle McKee (Louisville, Ky.).

McGee, Gents record holder in the 1,000 free, took the 1,000 free with a time of 10:01.01. McKee won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:15.44, setting a new pool record at the Fitness Center.

Centenary next competes against TCU at the Fitness Center Jan. 26. In the lone meeting with TCU this season, the Gents fell to the Horned Frogs, 68-34, Nov. 18. The dual meet with TCU is the final meet and final preparation for the Gents prior to the Mid-Continent Conference Championships, held Feb. 15-17, in Indianapolis.
