NORMAL, Ill.—The Centenary gymnastics team faltered Friday night in its quad meet hosted by Illinois State in finishing fourth with a score of 186.250. The Ladies were forced to count five scores below 9.000 on the evening and were issued penalty deductions three times. Southeast Missouri State (191.700) won the competition while Illinois State (191.100) and Illinois-Chicago (189.550) rounded out the top three.

Centenary (1-4) came into the meet without much practice time this week after dangerous weather conditions in Shreveport forced the cancellation of school and practice. The Ladies notched their highest team score in the meet with a 47.000 on the balance beam. Bethannie Bowie led the charge on the apparatus with a 9.675, good enough for fourth place individually. Kristina Menne also performed well on the beam with a 9.575 to rank inside the top 10.

Courtney Hawkins and Meredith Smith turned in scores of 9.550 (5th place) and 9.525 (9th place) to pace Centenary on the vault. Menne and Jessie Angus posted identical 9.650 scores to provide team-highs on the bars and Hawkins’ 9.600 was tops for the Ladies on the floor exercise. Menne placed third in the all-around with a combined total effort of 38.050.

Rikara Thurner of SEMO took the all-around title with her score of 38.575. A trio of Illinois State competitors nabbed the top spots on the vault (Meaghan Koshman, 9.725), bars (Amanda Candler, 9.800), and beam (Anne Fjordholm, 9.800) while Rachael Zelinski of UIC scored a 9.800 to take the floor event.

Centenary will compete again next Saturday in Denton, Texas, when the Ladies take on Texas Woman’s University at 7 p.m.
