SHREVEPORT, La. -- The Centenary women’s basketball team (4-15) fell, 75-61, to Chicago State Saturday at the Gold Dome. Chicago State was led by 20 points by senior forward Ayesha Neasley.

After a promising 10-0 run to start the game, the Ladies were outscored 16-2 by the Cougars to fall behind by four points, never to lead again for the remainder of the contest.

Outscoring Centenary by 22 points in the paint (44-22), Chicago State utilized its speed and aggressiveness in Saturday’s contest against the Ladies, driving to the hoop for several cutting layups. Attacking the rim following missed shots, the Cougars grabbed 19 offensive rebounds in the game, scoring 13 second chance points to just two for the Ladies.

Trailing 38-27 at the start of the second half, Centenary was able to put together a 6-0 run midway through the second half, cutting the deficit to six points following a layup by senior forward Jelena Aleksic (Belgrade, Serbia).

With momentum on their side, the Ladies were unable to capitalize on the almost three-minute scoreless drought by Chicago State, allowing the Cougars to penetrate the paint for slashing layups and extend the lead back up to 14 points. Chicago State would hold a double-digit lead for the final nine minutes of the contest, breaking a two-game losing streak and evening its record against Mid-Con teams at 2-2.

A predominately guard-laden lineup, four players scored in double figures for the Cougars, taking most of their shots from inside the arc and failing to make a three-pointer for the entire contest Saturday (0-5). Joining Neasley in double figures, sophomore Jasmin Dixon scored 15 points, grabbing seven rebounds and registering two steals. Seniors Chandra Timberlake and Faith Buchanan had 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Over the last few minutes of the game, Centenary was unable to string together a prolonged scoring run, unsuccessful at its attempt to cut into the Cougars’ lead.

Sophomore Cierra Bush (Campti, La.) led the Ladies with 24 points in Saturday’s game, going a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Bush scored over 20 points for the second-straight contest, hitting for 22 against UMKC Monday.

Also scoring in double figures for Centenary was Aleksic with 10 and freshman Monique Jefferson (Birmingham, Ala.), who scored a career-high 14 points.

Junior Sara Judice (Lafayette, La.) had a career-high 11 rebounds in Saturday’s loss.

As a team, Centenary shot 35.7 percent from the floor and hit 36.4 percent of its shots from three-point range. Chicago State hit 40.3 percent of its shots.

Centenary returns to Mid-Con play Monday, hosting Oral Roberts at the Gold Dome at 7 p.m. In Monday’s game, the Ladies look to break a 11-game losing streak in conference games.
