ELMHURST, Ill.—The Mid-Continent Conference released its preseason softball poll today and the Centenary Ladies are picked to finish second behind Western Illinois. The Westerwinds grabbed the top spot with 32 points and three first place votes while the Ladies totaled 30 points and two first place votes. The voting panel is comprised of the league’s seven head coaches, who cannot vote for their own team.

The rest of the poll shaped up with Southern Utah ranked third with 29 points and two first place votes, while Valparaiso (18), IUPUI (17), Oakland (13), and UMKC (8) rounded out the final four spots.

Centenary returns seven starters from last year’s squad that went 31-25 and 13-9 in Mid-Con play, good for second place. The Ladies lost their first-ever games in a Mid-Con Championship last season after going unbeaten in winning the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament the previous two years in a row.

Leading the returnees is senior outfielder Micah Rhodes (.416, 9 HR, 43 RBI), a first team All-Mid-Con selection in 2006 and a first team All-Louisiana and second team National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-South Region honoree.

Junior utility infielder Jennifer Mango (.314, 32 RBI), a second team all-conference pick, and sophomore shortstop Emerald Doria (.339, 10 HR, 26 RBI), last year’s Mid-Con Newcomer of the Year and All-Louisiana Freshman of the Year, are also back in the middle part of Centenary’s dangerous batting order.

The Ladies kick-off their 2007 schedule with a scrimmage against Bossier Parish Community College on February 3rd at noon at the Centenary Softball Complex. The Maroon and White will get their first taste of regular season action on February 9-11 as they face Memphis, Missouri, Middle Tennessee State, and #9 LSU at the Easton Tiger Classic in Baton Rouge.
