TIPPING OFF

The Centenary women’s basketball team (4-16, 0-5) continues Mid-Continent Conference play when it hosts Oakland (8-10, 4-1) Saturday at the Gold Dome. Game time for Saturday’s Homecoming Game is set for 2 p.m., part of a doubleheader with the Centenary men’s basketball team.

Although struggling of late, the Ladies look to capture their first win against the Golden Grizzlies in program history Saturday. This season, Centenary has a 3-7 record at the Gold Dome.

LADIES FALL TO ORAL ROBERTS

Led by a career-high 32 points by senior forward Elisha Turek, Oral Roberts defeated Centenary, 86-61, Monday at the Gold Dome.

Turek, who registered her conference-leading ninth 20-plus point performance, added 15 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season, hitting 13-of-17 shots in the game. As the Golden Eagles outscored the Ladies 26-9 in second-chance points in Monday’s game, Turek grabbed nine offensive rebounds, equalling the total number of offensive rebounds by Centenary.

Centenary cut the deficit to six points midway through the first half, but allowed seven-straight points to fall behind by 13, unable to recover for the remainder of the game.

The 86 points scored by Oral Roberts represents the greatest number of points Centenary has allowed this season.

Sophomore Cierra Bush led Centenary with 22 points, her third consecutive game with 20-plus points.

BUSH RIGHT BEHIND TUREK

With her third-straight game with over 20 points, sophomore Cierra Bush surged to second in the Mid-Con in 20-plus point games. Standing right behind conference-leading scorer Elisha Turek of Oral Roberts, Bush has five 20-plus point games this season, sitting in second place in games with over 20 points.

Becoming the Ladies go-to scorer of late, Bush had a career-high 27 points against Southern Miss earlier this season. The sophomore guard is averaging 11.1 points per game and a team-leading 6.0 rebounds per game.

HALFTIME LEADS TO WIN

A key statistic in Centenary games this season, the Ladies are undefeated when leading at halftime.

In all four Centenary wins this season, the Ladies have been up at the half, yet to make up a deficit in the second half (0-16).

Centenary is shooting almost an identical 36 percent over the first and second half, while opponents are shooting 42.8 percent in the first half, better than the 40.7 percent of the second half.

WILKINS ENTERS TOP 100, LEADS MID-CON

Centenary senior guard Holli Wilkins entered the top 100 nationally in steals per game following her two steals against Oral Roberts Monday.

Wilkins, the all-time steals leader in Centenary history, is averaging 2.35 steals per game to stand 90th nationally, leading the Mid-Con for a second-straight season.

Last season, Wilkins finished the year eighth nationally in steals per game, averaging 3.4 steals per game.

WILKINS APPROACHING POINT MARK

Scoring 936 points in her collegiate career, senior guard Holli Wilkins is quickly moving towards the 1,000-point plateau.

If Wilkins passes the point mark, she will become the third Centenary player to surpass 1,000 points for her collegiate career, joining Alexis Pettway and Julie Danieles.

For her career, the senior guard is averaging 10.1 points per game, standing in third place in career scoring average at Centenary. This season, Wilkins is averaging a team-leading 11.8 ppg.

OAKLAND LEADS SERIES 6-0

Centenary searches for their first win in the lifetime series against Oakland in Saturday’s game.

In three previous meetings with the Golden Grizzlies at the Gold Dome, Centenary has lost by an average of 17.3 points, allowing an average of 72.7 points per contest.

The last game between Oakland and Centenary ended with a 78-53 win by the Golden Grizzlies, played Feb. 18, 2006 at the Gold Dome. In the loss, senior guard Holli Wilkins had 13 points and seven rebounds in 33 minutes of play.

A LOOK AT OAKLAND

Oakland enters Saturday’s game on a four-game winning streak, defeating UMKC and Southern Utah in Mid-Continent Conference action last weekend.

In their last game, the Golden Grizzlies defeated Southern Utah, 83-36, led by senior Nicole Piggott and freshman Hanna Reising, both with 15 points. Piggott led Oakland from the floor, going 7-for-10 from the field and dishing out five assists. Reising went 3-for-5 from three-point range.

For the game, Oakland shot 64.7 percent from the field, hitting seven three-pointers.

With Oakland averaging 64.9 points per game, standing second in the conference, the Golden Grizzlies are led by Piggott. The 5-foot-11 forward is averaging a team-leading 13.4 ppg. and 5.0 rpg., hitting 42.9 percent of her shots. Piggott leads Oakland in minutes this season, averaging 34.0 mpg.

Sophomore guard Jessica Pike is also averaging double-digits for Oakland, scoring 13.2 ppg., leading the Golden Grizzlies from three-point range (.404). Pike is averaging 2.8 assists per game.

On the road this season, Oakland has a 3-7 record.

While leading the conference in steals (2.4 spg.), Wilkins has the fourth-best free-throw percentage (.779) and stands fifth in the Mid-Con in both assists (3.0 apg.) and three-pointers (1.7 3FG/gm). Wilkins is seventh in the conference in scoring, averaging 11.8 ppg.

Junior Sara Judice is ninth in the Mid-Con in offensive rebounds (1.82 rpg.).

WILKINS BECOMES LEADER

Recording a game-high five steals against McNeese State Dec. 30, senior guard Holli Wilkins became the all-time steals leader in Centenary history, passing former Ladies guard Julie Danieles for the top spot.

Leading the Mid-Con in steals per game this season (2.4 spg.), Wilkins broke the single-season steals record in Ladies history in her junior year, registering 82 steals to finish eighth nationally.

Wilkins is in line to finish the season as the Mid-Con leader in steals for the second-straight season.

LADIES SNAP STREAK

In the 84-70 win over Sam Houston State, Centenary ended its road losing streak stretching over five seasons.

Not earning a road win since the 2002-03 season, the Ladies’ road losing streak spanned 55 games. Prior to the win over Sam Houston State Dec. 17, Centenary last defeated an opponent on the road Dec. 7, 2002, winning over St. Francis (NY) College.
