SHREVEPORT, La. -- Centenary (4-17, 0-6) fell 73-61 to Oakland (9-10, 5-1) Saturday at the Gold Dome, unable to capture its first conference win of the season.

Lack of focus and poor interior defense may have been the culprit in the 12-point loss to the Golden Grizzlies Saturday. Centenary turned the ball over 25 times, to 16 turnovers for Oakland resulting in 27 points.

In the paint, Oakland scored 40 points to just 16 for the Ladies, something Centenary head coach Steve Curtis says his team must improve upon. Curtis praised his team’s effort, however remarked how his team must remain focused for the full 40 minutes of the game.

"We’re playing hard enough, we’re just not playing smart enough," Curtis said. "They’re (Oakland) a good enough team that every time we made a mistake, they’d get a basket out of it."

Giving his full compliments to the Oakland team, which was tied for the conference lead heading into Saturday’s game, Curtis said his team lost due to their mistakes.

Down by nine to start the second half, Centenary had an early run on the Golden Grizzlies, cutting the lead to six following a three-pointer by senior guard Holli Wilkins (Evadale, Texas), who led the Ladies with 18 points.

On the ensuing possession following Wilkins’ three, Centenary sophomore guard Cierra Bush (Campti, La.) showed tremendous effort to recover underneath the basket and block a shot attempt by Hanna Reising of Oakland, bringing the crowd to its feet in appreciation.

After the Golden Grizzlies reestablished a nine-point lead with under 15 minutes left in the contest, freshman guard Monique Jefferson (Birmingham, Ala.) nailed a three right in front of the Centenary bench, again brining the Ladies to within six points of tying the game.

Unable to get over the hump after Jefferson’s three, Centenary endured a six-minute span without a basket, outscored 7-1 during the stretch.

With less than eight minutes remaining, a jumper by Ladies junior Sara Judice (Lafayette, La.) made the score 60-49 in favor of Oakland, however the Golden Grizzlies would go on a 9-0 run to take a 20-point lead with just under six minutes remaining.

Lack of execution both on the offensive and defensive end for Centenary could be viewed as the culprit during the late run by the Golden Grizzlies, which improved to 5-1 in conference play.

During the stretch, Centenary turned the ball over four times, not getting a shot attempt on the offensive end, illustrating the mistakes that have plagued the Ladies of late.

Reising led Oakland with 16 points in the win, adding seven rebounds and three assists.

For the game, Centenary shot 35.1 percent from the floor, hitting 39.1 percent of its three-point attempts.

Centenary looks to get back into the conference race when it hosts IUPUI Monday at 7 p.m.
