Gents Look for Season Sweep at Western Illinois

MACOMB, Ill.—The Centenary men’s basketball team begins a weekend Mid-Continent Conference road trip with a Thursday match-up at Western Illinois at 7 p.m. The Gents are looking for the season sweep of the Leathernecks after defeating Western Illinois in the Gold Dome in early January 64-58.


Centenary (7-15, 1-6 Mid-Con) has lost five consecutive conference games, but four of their six league defeats have been by less than 10 points and three more have been by less than five points. The Gents are second in the Mid-Con in scoring per game (70.3 ppg) and first in assists (13.68 apg) and steals (8.23 spg). Sophomore Tyrone Hamilton is third in the league in scoring at 16.5 ppg while freshman Chase Adams has moved into the top spot in assist to turnover ratio at 1.63.


Western Illinois (4-18, 0-7 Mid-Con) is winless in seven tries within conference play and has lost 12 games in row overall. The Leathernecks have shown signs of life lately, losing to Southern Utah by just three (68-65) and UMKC in double overtime (95-89), both on the road. David Jackson leads Western Illinois in scoring at 13.1 ppg while Sammy Hunter is also posting double figures at 12.3 ppg.


Thursday’s game marks the ninth meeting all-time between the Gents and Leathernecks, with the series tied at 4-4. Centenary completes its road swing at Valparaiso for a 7:05 p.m. contest on Saturday.
