opened the day for Centenary

SHREVEPORT, La. -- The Centenary baseball team (0-2) took the field for the first time in the 2007 season Saturday, falling in both games against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a doubleheader at Shehee Stadium.

Getting a fresh start to a new season, Centenary battled back in both games of Saturday’s doubleheader, falling, 8-5, in extra innings in Game 1 and dropping a close contest, 8-6, in Game 2.

Starting the season with a bang for the Gents, senior Matt Webb (Blue Springs, Mo.) and junior Alex Maldonado (Whittier, Calif.) each chipped-in with three RBI in Saturday’s doubleheader, with Webb hitting the lone home run for Centenary Saturday.

The Gents play the final game of the three-game series against the Islanders Sunday at Shehee Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for noon. In Sunday’s game, junior Jeremy Sheehan (Bonner Springs, Kan.) takes the hill for Centenary, with Emerson Trager set to start for Corpus Christi.

Centenary blazed out to a 2-0 first inning lead following a two-run shot over the left-center wall by Webb, who went 2-for-3 in Game 1. Sitting with a 3-1 count, Webb took Islander starting pitcher Will Norman deep for his first homer of the season, scoring junior Cameron Penny (San Diego, Calif.) from first.

After Corpus Christi got one back in the top of the second, the Islanders scored runs in the fourth and the sixth to take a 3-2 lead on the Gents.

With two outs in the sixth and the scored tied at 2-2, catcher Josh Plumaj doubled to left to extend the inning, allowing sophomore Martin Parra to double to left for the go-ahead run.

Although trailing by one at 5-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Gents rallied to force extra innings when freshman Garrett DeRooy (Duvall, Wash.) stole third base and scored on throwing error by Plumaj.

In extras, Centenary had a golden opportunity to grab the lead and the capture the victory as Webb was hit by a Troy Maldonado pitch to lead off the inning. Webb advanced to second with one out, but the Gents were unable to bring the senior home for the game-winning run, stranding the outfielder at third base.

The following inning, junior Chris Widner hits a three-run homer to left center, making the score 8-5 in favor of the visiting Islanders and closing the door on the Gents.

Maldonado pitched a 1-2-3 11th inning to earn the victory.

For Centenary, senior Brandon Fulencheck (McKinney, Texas) went 6 2/3 innings in a no decision, allowing seven hits and three runs.

Game 2 - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 8, Centenary 6

In Game 2 of the doubleheader, Centenary held the lead two times over the Islanders, allowing Corpus Christi to tie the game in the sixth and win with two runs in the seventh and final inning.

The Gents again came out of the gates on fire, scoring three runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead on the Islanders. After Maldonado opened the inning with a double to right, junior Teddy Saenz (San Jose, Calif.) hit a sharp single to right, scoring the junior catcher and giving the Gents an early lead. Saenz RBI single was duplicated by senior Justin Huff (Beaumont, Texas) and Penny later in the inning.

Down 6-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, Huff led off the inning drawing a walk and stealing second base to put the potential tying run in scoring position. After a Penny single to right and a Webb groundout, Huff scored to tie the game at 6-6 heading into the final inning.
