MACOMB, Ill. -- The Centenary women’s basketball team (4-20, 0-9) struggled from the floor Monday, falling to Western Illinois (9-14, 5-4), 60-32, at Western Hall.

Scoring a season-low 32 points, the Ladies shot just 25 percent from the floor in Monday’s game against the Westerwinds. With only five players scoring for Centenary, the 25 percent set a new season-low for shooting percentage by the Ladies, who continue to search for their first win in conference play.

After trailing by six to start Monday’s game, Centenary battled back to take a four-point lead on the Westerwinds following a Jelena Aleksic (Belgrade, Serbia) layup with 11:23 left in the first half.

Following Aleksic’s layup, Western Illinois went on a 22-0 run, holding Centenary scoreless for almost nine minutes. Pinpoint shooting aided the Westerwinds during the first-half run, hitting 61.5 percent (8-13) of their three-point shots and taking a 37-18 lead at the half.

Playing their second game without injured guard and leading scorer Holli Wilkins (Evadale, Texas), the Ladies’ shooting woes continued in the second half, hitting just 16.7 percent (4-24) of their shots following the intermission.

Centenary, trailing by close to 20 points for most of the second half, couldn’t take advantage of poor shooting by the Westerwinds, who failed to make a three-pointer following halftime. A layup by Ladies freshman Samantha Gillespie (Glenmora, La.) made the score 44-29 with nine minutes remaining, but eight-straight points by Western Illinois again pushed the deficit to more than 20 points with time running out in the contest.

Centenary would manage only three more points in the final five minutes against the Westerwinds.

Three Westerwind players ended the game with double-digit scoring, led by forward Stephanie Lovingood’s 12 points. Lovingood ended the game with a double-double, adding 13 points to her 12 points.

Ladies sophomore Cierra Bush (Campti, La.) led Centenary with 11 points and seven rebounds in 36 minutes of play.

Centenary returns to action Saturday, hosting UMKC at the Gold Dome at 4:30 p.m. In Saturday’s game, the Ladies look to avenge a seven-point loss to the Kangaroos earlier this season.
