Southern Utah leads 5-2

The Centenary women’s basketball team (4-21, 0-10) faces Southern Utah (9-14, 5-4) Monday at 7 p.m., taking the Gold Dome floor for the final time in the 2006-07 season.

The Ladies look to earn redemption from a 10-point loss suffered at the hands of the Thunderbirds earlier this season in Monday’s game.

Three seniors play their final game at the Gold Dome in Monday’s contest against Southern Utah. Taking the floor for one final time, guard Holli Wilkins will be joined by forwards Jelena Aleksic and Tracee Byrd.

Together, the three seniors helped usher in the first season under first-year Ladies head coach Steve Curtis and look to go out on winning note against the Thunderbirds Monday.

After missing two games due to injury, senior guard Holli Wilkins returned to action Saturday against UMKC.

The guard logged 24 minutes in Saturday’s game, scoring four points and grabbing three boards. Wilkins leads the Ladies in scoring this season, averaging 12.0 ppg.

The Thunderbirds enter Monday’s game standing third in the Mid-Continent Conference standings with a 5-4 record in conference games this season.

This season, the Thunderbirds have had their struggles on the road, heading into Monday’s game with the Ladies with an 0-11 record on the road. In their last game, Southern Utah fell to Oral Roberts by a score of 60-52, with the game played in Tulsa, Okla. Saturday.

On both offensive and defensive end, Southern Utah is led by sophomore forward Anne Westwood, who led the Thunderbirds with 19 points and 14 rebounds in this season’s previous meeting with Centenary. Westwood averages a team-leading 10.0 ppg. and 7.0 rpg., playing 29 minutes per contest. In 14 games this season, Westwood has led Southern Utah in rebounds. On the offensive end, Westwood is heavily involved around the basket, producing second-chance opportunities for the Thunderbirds.

As a team, Southern Utah is outshooting their opponents, hitting an average of 38.8 percent of their shots, including 35.0 percent of their three-point opportunities.

In the seven previous games against the Thunderbirds, Centenary holds a 2-5 record against Southern Utah.

In two of the three lifetime meetings at the Gold Dome, Centenary has earned victories over the Thunderbirds.

Last season, the Ladies defeated the Thunderbirds, 76-67, played Jan. 16, 2006. In the game, senior guard Holli Wilkins led all players with 27 points, hitting a remarkable six three-pointers and registering five steals.

Centenary and Southern Utah battled back-and-forth in the Jan. 13 matchup. With the scored tied five times during the contest, a 6-0 Thunderbird run with less than five minutes remaining propelled the home team to the 10-point victory, 63-53, over Centenary.

With Holli Wilkins and Sara Judice combining for 21 points in the game and Cierra Bush crashing the boards for 12 rebounds, the Ladies just couldn’t take advantage of the numerous ties and pull away from Southern Utah.

Anne Westwood led the Thunderbirds with 19 points and 14 rebounds, hitting 6-of-12 shots. Guard Silvia Da Silva added 14 points.

For the game, Centenary shot 27.8 percent from the floor, looking to improve their accuracy in Monday’s game.

23 TO GO

Holli Wilkins is quickly approaching the 1,000-point mark for her collegiate career.

With 977 points in her four seasons with the Ladies, Wilkins is just 23 points shy of reaching the 1,000 points.

Wilkins stands sixth in the Mid-Con in scoring this season, ranking third in three-pointers per game. She has led the Ladies in scoring the past two seasons.

Senior forward Jelena Aleksic leads the Ladies in field goal percentage at the Gold Dome. Averaging 12.4 ppg. at home, Aleksic is hitting a team-leading 47.4 percent of her shots at the Gold Dome. At home this season, the senior leads all Centenary players in minutes played, averaging 32.3 minutes per game.

In her last appearance at home, Aleksic led the team with 16 points, hitting 6-of-13 from the floor and playing all but two minutes in the contest.

Notching a new career-high for points this season, Centenary sophomore guard Cierra Bush stands tied for second in the Mid-Con in 20-plus point games. With five games this season of 20 or more points this season, Bush is right behind 2006-07 Preseason Mid-Con Player of the Year, Elisha Turek of Oral Roberts.

This season, Bush is amongst the top scorers in the Mid-Con, standing in the conference top 10 in scoring, averaging 10.6 ppg. Bush leads the Ladies in rebounding this season, averaging 6.1 boards per game.

Centenary is 4-1 this season when hitting 70 points in contest, looking for that magic number in Monday’s game.

The lone loss when hitting 70 points came at the Gold Dome Nov. 30 against Louisiana-Monroe.

Recording a game-high five steals against McNeese State Dec. 30, senior guard Holli Wilkins became the all-time steals leader in Centenary history, passing former Ladies guard Julie Danieles for the top spot.

Wilkins remains amongst the steal leaders in the conference, averaging 2.3 spg. this season and standing third in the Mid-Con. The senior guard broke the single-season steals record in Ladies history in her junior year, registering 82 steals to finish eighth nationally.

Wilkins has an opportunity to lead the conference in steals for the second consecutive season.

In the 84-70 win over Sam Houston State, Centenary ended its road losing streak stretching over five seasons.

Not earning a road win since the 2002-03 season, the Ladies’ road losing streak spanned 55 games. Prior to the win over Sam Houston State Dec. 17, Centenary last defeated an opponent on the road Dec. 7, 2002, winning over St. Francis (NY) College.

Centenary travels to Tulsa, Okla. to face Oral Roberts for a 7 p.m. game Feb. 19.
