SHREVEPORT, La. -- Junior Calvin Sanchez was named Mid-Continent Conference Player of the Week, becoming the first Gents baseball player to earn the weekly honor this season.

Sanchez, an outfielder from Santa Cruz, Calif., tied for the team lead in batting in this past weekend’s three-game sweep of Jackson State at Shehee Stadium, hitting .500 for the series.

Going 5-for-10 from the plate, Sanchez had a team-leading .700 slugging percentage and .615 on-base percentage. He tied for the Gents lead with two doubles in the three games, ending the series with three RBI and four stolen bases.

Pivotal in Centenary’s 7-6 extra innings win over the Tigers, Sanchez scored the game-winning run for the Gents. After drawing a walk to get the winning run aboard in the bottom of the ninth, Sanchez stole second and scored on a Tim Kelleher single to left. For the game, he had three stolen bases.

This season, Sanchez is hitting .462 with a .615 slugging percentage and .562 on-base percentage.

Sanchez and the Gents travel to Northwestern State Tuesday for non-conference action in Natchitoches.
