Matt Webb leads the Mid-Con
with 7 stolen bases this year

SHREVEPORT, La. -- Coming off a three-game sweep of Jackson State this past weekend, the Centenary baseball team (3-3) travels up Interstate 49 to face Northwestern State Tuesday in Natchitoches. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Brown-Stroud Field.

Facing the Demons in their first midweek game of the season, the Gents are poised and in good spirits following their weekend sweep of Jackson State.

In the sweep, Centenary racked 27 runs, including a season-high 13 runs in its 13-6 win Saturday.

Three players enter Tuesday’s game hitting over .400 this season, led by juniors Cameron Penny (San Diego) and Calvin Sanchez (Santa Cruz, Calif.). Senior outfielder Matt Webb (Blue Springs, Mo.) joins the two juniors, batting over .400 in six games.

Penny, an infielder, has hits in all six games this season, batting .458 with five RBI. The junior has an on-base percentage of .519 and a slugging percentage of .500.

Sanchez, the reigning Mid-Con Player of the Week, has an on-base percentage of .562 and a slugging percentage of .615, while batting .462 in six games. Coming off a breakout weekend against Jackson State, Sanchez has three RBI and five runs scored this season.

Webb leads the Gents with eight runs scored and is hitting .412 this season from the plate. His on-base percentage of .607 leads the Gents, in addition to his team-leading .706 slugging percentage. This season, Webb leads the Mid-Con with seven stolen bases in six games.

Junior lefty Johnny Noland (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) draws his first start of the season in Tuesday’s contest against the Demons. Noland has made two relief appearances this season with a 0-0 record.

Winless on the season after last weekend’s series against Dallas Baptist, Northwestern State starts newcomer Jason Grace in Tuesday’s game.

Grace has made one relief appearance this season for the Demons, allowing three runs in 1 2/3 innings of work. The lefty has struck out three in his lone appearance.

From the plate, Northwestern State is led by freshman Chase Lyles after last weekend’s opening series. Lyles has a .444 batting average and with a team-leading on-base percentage of .545.

Freshman infielder Jacob Rhodes has a team-leading four RBI while batting .222 from the plate.

Following Tuesday’s game, Centenary returns to Shehee Stadium to host Kansas State and Penn State in the 2007 Gents Baseball Classic. Game will be played between the three teams Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
