Tuesday for the Gents

SHREVEPORT, La. -- Centenary (5-6) travels to Nacogdoches, Texas to visit Stephen F. Austin (2-6) Tuesday, facing the Lumberjacks in their 2007 home opener at Jaycees Field. Game time Tuesday is set for 2 p.m.

The Gents are coming off a four-game split against Penn State and Kansas State this past weekend at the 2007 Gents Baseball Classic at Shehee Stadium.

In the four games, Brandon Fulenchek (McKinney, Texas) and Jeremy Sheehan (Bonner Springs, Kan.) picked up wins for the Gents, defeating Penn State and Kansas State, respectively.

For the four games over the weekend, senior outfielder Matt Webb (Blue Springs, Mo.) led the Gents with a .571 batting average, although only registering seven at-bats. Webb drew a team-high nine walks and had an on-base percentage of .842, recording two RBI.

Leading Centenary in RBI over the past four games was junior catcher Alex Maldonado (Whittier, Calif.), who knocked in four in four games against Penn State and Kansas State. Maldonado went 5-for-13 from the plate for a .385 batting average.

In overall games, junior outfielder Calvin Sanchez (Santa Cruz, Calif.) is among the Mid-Continent Conference leaders in batting with a .424 average this season. Sanchez is second behind Webb with an on-base percentage of .513 and a slugging percentage of .515. The junior has eight stolen bases this season.

On the mound, sophomore righthander Derek Bross (St. Joseph, Mich.) gets his first start for Centenary this season. Bross, making two relief appearances this year, has not allowed a run in 1 1/3 innings, allowing three hits.

Stephen F. Austin is coming off of getting swept by national-power Baylor over the weekend.

The Lumberjacks are led in batting by Jeremy Arterburn, batting .400 in five games this season. Arterburn has a team-leading .600 slugging percentage and .500 on-base percentage.

In the RBI department, Jared Pitts and Chris Smith are both tied with six RBI this season.

Tuesday’s game will be the home opener for the Lumberjacks.
