Gents Look to Secure Seventh Seed on Road Trip

ROCHESTER, Mich.—The Centenary men’s basketball team currently holds a one-game lead over Western Illinois for the seventh seed in the upcoming Mid-Continent Conference Tournament in Tulsa. The Gents look to secure the seventh spot with a victory over either Oakland or IUPUI on the road in the final week of the regular season.


Centenary (10-18, 3-9 Mid-Con) will take on Oakland (15-13, 8-4 Mid-Con) on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Rochester, Mich. The Golden Grizzlies are 8-2 at home this season and currently own second place in the league standings. The Gents lost to Oakland 82-74 in the Gold Dome on January 27th.


The Gents are playing well right now and have won three of their last four games. Their only loss came at league-leading Oral Roberts, where Centenary owned the lead late, but fell 85-80.


Through 12 Mid-Con games, sophomore Tyrone Hamilton is second in the conference in scoring average at 16.4 ppg. Senior Alexander Starr is third while pumping in 16.1 ppg in Mid-Con play in addition to ranking third in rebounding against the league at 6.6 rpg. Sophomore Nick Stallings has also upped his game of late, averaging 15.8 ppg over his last four games.


Oakland is the top offensive rebounding team in the Mid-Con at 12.79 boards per game. Vova Severovas leads the Golden Grizzlies offensive attack by scoring 14.1 ppg. Oakland has dropped three of its last four games, two in overtime and the third by one point to Western Illinois.


Centenary will wrap up its regular season at IUPUI (13-13, 6-6 Mid-Con) with a 7 p.m. contest on Saturday in Indianapolis. The Jaguars currently occupy fifth place in the conference standings. IUPUI defeated the Gents 70-68 in the Gold Dome on January 25th.
