ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Twenty-seven turnovers doomed the Centenary women’s basketball team (5-24, 1-13) against Oakland University (17-11, 12-2) Monday at the O’Rena, in Rochester, Mich. The Ladies fell to the Grizzlies, 73-53, in the regular season finale Monday.

Clinching the Mid-Continent Conference regular season crown on their senior night, Oakland scored 28 points off of Centenary turnovers Monday.

The Grizzlies led the whole way in Monday’s lopsided victory, playing a physical style of basketball that resulted in a huge advantage in rebounding for the home squad. Oakland grabbed 49 rebounds in Monday’s game, including a 23-6 advantage in offensive rebounds.

In the paint, Oakland outscored the Ladies by a 40-6 margin, with much of the inside scoring coming as a result of the offensive rebounds.

Centenary closed the margin to just eight points at the half, trailing 42-34 with 20 minutes remaining in the game.

A Sara Judice (Lafayette, La.) three to open the second half cut the deficit to five for the Ladies, showing promise after the intermission.

Trading baskets in the opening five minutes of the second half, another Judice three cut the Oakland lead to four with 17:06 remaining.

After Judice made a layup with 13:22 left in the game, making it an eight-point lead for the Grizzlies, Centenary went on almost a seven-minute scoring drought, outscored 13-0 by Oakland during the span.

With the drought proving to be one of the keys to the Oakland win, the Grizzlies led by over 20 points with less than seven minutes remaining in the game, sealing the victory and the regular season conference championship.

Sophomore Cierra Bush (Campti, La.) led the Ladies with 12 points and nine rebounds in 32 minutes. Bush hit 4-of-7 shots from the floor Monday, including hitting 3-of-4 three-point attempts. Judice added 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting.

Leading all scorers in the game, Oakland forward Nicole Piggott finished with 24 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Melissa Jeltema had 12 points in the Grizzlies win.

As Centenary enters this weekend’s Mid-Continent Tournament with the No. 8 seed, the Ladies prepare for another matchup against the No. 1-seeded Grizzlies Saturday. Scheduled for a noon start Saturday, the two teams meet up at Hammons Arena in Tulsa, Okla.
