Fulenchek allowed just two hits
in the 9-1 win Friday

SHREVEPORT, La. -- Centenary (7-9) allowed just three hits in Friday’s 9-1 win over the University of Toledo (2-1) at Shehee Stadium.

Setting a new season-low for hits allowed in a single game, sound pitching and defense led the Gents to the eight-run win over the Rockets Friday.

The pitching combination of seniors Brandon Fulenchek (McKinney, Texas) and David McElroy (Victoria, B.C.) induced a number of ground balls and flyouts by the Toledo hitters throughout the evening.

Fulenchek, getting the start for the Gents, went six innings for the win. Striking out two, the senior lefty routinely worked his way out of jams against the Rockets, allowing just a run.

McElroy came into the game in the seventh, allowing one hit and striking out four for his first save of the season.

Building off the quality defense and pitching, Centenary built a 2-0 lead in the first when senior Justin Huff (Beaumont, Texas) led off the game with a triple to right field. Showing speed around the bases, Huff ripped the ball to the right-corner of the field for the stand-up triple.

After Huff scored on an error by Toledo second baseman Tim Krofcheck, junior Cameron Penney (Valley Center, Calif) scored when Rockets first baseman Josh Colliver dropped a ball thrown to first, allowing the Gents to take the two-run lead.

With the early lead, Centenary would add three more runs in the fourth inning.

Juniors Calvin Sanchez (Santa Cruz, Calif.) and Alex Maldonado (Whittier, Calif.) both reached base to lead off the inning, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Teddy Saenz (San Jose, Calif.) to move the runners to second and third.

The following batter, freshman Garrett DeRooy (Duvall, Wash.), blooped a single into left, scoring Sanchez from third and give the Gents a two-run cushion at 3-1. DeRooy’s hit was misread by Rockets third baseman Scott Boley, dropping into left and allowing Sanchez to score.

Maldonado would later score on a Nate Santiago (Mulkilteo, Wash.) groundout, followed by a Huff squeeze bunt down the third-base line to score DeRooy from third.

Ahead 4-1 after the fourth, the Gents would cruise the rest of the game to pick up the eight-run win.

Eight-of-nine Centenary batters picked up hits in Friday’s win, led by two hits a piece by Huff and fellow-senior Matt Webb (Blue Springs, Mo.). Penny went 1-for-4 from the plate, scoring a team-high three runs in the win.

Maldonado led the Gents with two RBI.

Picking up the loss for the Rockets, starting pitcher Kyle Rawlings pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs and walking four batters.

The two teams continue the three-game series Saturday at Shehee Stadium, with the game set for a 1 p.m. start.
