Leigh Newton shot a season-low
78 in the first round.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Centenary women’s golf team stands in 11th place after Monday’s first round of the Troy University Women’s Intercollegiate, played at the Arrowhead Country Club, in Montgomery, Ala. The Ladies shot a team score of 321 in the first round.

Sophomore Leigh Newton (Edmonton, Alberta/Strathcona Composite) leads Centenary following the opening 18 holes of play. Standing tied for 34th in the tournament, Newton shot a season-low 78 in Monday’s first round.

Right behind Newton, fellow-sophomore Jessica Garza (McKinney, Texas/McKinney North) shot 79 in the first round, tied for 39th in the tournament.

Elin Andersson of South Alabama stands as the overall leader after the first round, carding a 3-under 69 after 18 holes. Enter Tuesday’s final round, Andersson holds a three-stroke advantage over Staci Lynch of Austin Peay, who shot a 72 Monday.

South Alabama, led by Andersson, holds the team lead with 18 holes to play, leading Louisiana-Monroe by five strokes.

Teams resume play Tuesday morning.
