Jessica Garza shot the low round
for the Ladies Tuesday

MOBILE, Ala. -- The Centenary women’s golf team matched its season-low tournament score in this week’s 2007 USA Lady Jaguar Invitational, played at the Azalea City Golf Club, in Mobile, Ala. The Ladies were led by sophomore Jessica Garza in this week’s tournament.

Finishing with a team score of 641 in the Lady Jaguar Invitational, hosted by South Alabama, the Ladies registered its season-best score for a two-round tournament. In Tuesday’s final round, Centenary shot a 325 to finish tied for 19th in this week’s tournament.

Garza, the reigning Mid-Continent Conference Female Golfer of the Week, led the Ladies with a 78 in Tuesday’s final round to place in a tie for 41st in the event. The Mckinney, Texas, native shot 77-78 for a 155 in the tournament, her best two-round score this season.

Junior Chloe’ Mims (Texarkana, Texas) finished tied for 44th in the tournament with a two-round score of 156. Mims, who was tied for fourth after Monday’s first round, shot an 83 in the final round. She shot her best round of the season in Monday’s first round with a 1-over 73, notching a new season low for score in a two-round tournament.

Going 79-82 in the tournament for a 161, sophomore Tracy Williams (Van Alstyne, Texas) finished in a tie for 76th in the tournament.

Sophomore Leigh Newton (Edmonton, Alberta) finished with a tournament score of 170, carding an 82 in Tuesday’s final round. Newton was followed by freshman Brittany Blackwell (Colleyville, Texas), who went 87-86 (173) in the two-day tournament.

Middle Tennessee State won the overall team title by 14 strokes over second-place Jacksonville State. Behind the play of individual tournament champion Taryn Durham and Mallory Bishop, Middle Tennessee State finished with a tournament score of 592 (299-292).

Durham won the tournament by two strokes over Malin Fryk of Western Carolina. In Tuesday’s final round, Durham shot a 4-under 68 to stand as the only player to shoot under 70. She shot a 142 in the tournament for the win.

Centenary now takes a week off to prepare for the Samford Intercollegiate, played in Calera, Ala. March 19-20 at the Timberline Golf Club.
