Bre Fletcher scored the
game-winner for Centenary

RUSTON, La. -- The Centenary women’s soccer team continued the Spring season in fine fashion, earning a 1-0 shutout win over Louisiana Tech at Aillet Stadium, in Ruston, Thursday.

A first-half goal by Centenary senior Bre Fletcher (Schertz, Texas) proved to be the difference-maker in the Spring exhibition game. On a breakaway, Fletcher beat the Lady Techster’s goalkeeper to score the game-winning goal for the Ladies.

Noting that several young players stepped up in Thursday’s game against Lousiana Tech, some playing out of their normal positions, Centenary women’s soccer head coach Chase Wooten has been please with the progress of the team in the Spring.

"It has been our best Spring in years. This team has come together and has really learned how to win," Wooten said. "They step on the field and know that no team is going to out-work us. It has been truly wonderful to watch this group of players grow."

Although attacked heavily by Louisiana Tech in the second half, defensive adjustments by Centenary helped the visitors maintain the one-goal lead. In her first true start in goal, Centenary sophomore Kate Donnelly (Seabrooke, Texas) picked up the shutout win for the Ladies.

Aiding Donnelly in the Centenary net, the play of defenders Lauren Cheany (Shreveport) and Kortney Causey (Wylie, Texas) was complemented by Wooten, in addition to strong play of midfielders Lauren Stanley (Mesquite, Texas) and Michael Anne Wheeler (Abilene, Texas).

Wheeler, who played majority of the game, was playing with a slight case of the flu in Thursday’s shutout victory.

Sophomore forward Brittany O’Neal (Nacogdoches, Texas) led the attack up top for the Ladies against Louisiana Tech, continuously putting pressure on the Techster defenders.

Centenary next plays Northwestern State next weekend in Spring action.
