Thirteen teams collide
this week at StoneBridge

SHREVEPORT, La. -- Mid-Continent teams collide in Bossier City this week, as Centenary is set to host the 2007 Mid-Continent Conference Golf Championships at the Golf Course at StoneBridge Monday and Tuesday.

A combined 13 men’s and women’s golf programs hit the course Monday morning at StoneBridge, all vying for the 2007 Mid-Continent crown.

The Centenary men’s team heads into this week’s conference championships as the No. 7 seed in the Mid-Con.

Led by senior David Viviano (Lafayette, La.), the Gents have a 312.6 stroke average per round, shooting a season-best round of 298 on two occasions.

What is important about the low score of 298, the round was recorded at StoneBridge, site of this week’s tournament. In a dual match against Southern Utah at StoneBridge March 15, Centenary was led by Viviano’s 70, as the senior was the overall leader of the match.

This season in 20 rounds of golf, Viviano is averaging 76.8 per round, with a season-low round of 68, shot Sept. 9 at StoneBridge. The senior looks to go out with a bang in this week’s two-day, 54-hole tournament at StoneBridge (Par 72, 6,954 yards).

Playing with Viviano this week, freshman Mark Weeber (Harare, Zimbabwe) holds the second-best scoring average on the Gents at 78.0. In the Centenary Fall Classic at StoneBridge, Sept. 9-10, Weeber captured his career-best finish, finishing in a tie for 16th.

Freshman Tyler Williams (Shreveport) has a scoring average of 79.4, followed closely by sophomore John Hogan (Eden Prairie, Minn.) at 79.5. Williams shot his low round of the season March 15 against Southern Utah at StoneBridge with a 73, looking for a duplicate effort Monday and Tuesday.

Freshman Nick Faitz (North Little Rock, Ark.) has a scoring average of 81.1, playing in the No. 5 position for the Gents this week.

In six rounds at StoneBridge this season, the Gents have a team average of 308.6, looking to better that mark in the conference championships.

The Centenary women’s golf team will head into this week’s conference championships as the No. 3 seed in the Mid-Con. Having to play in the lead group with Oral Roberts and Oakland, the Ladies are led by the play of sophomore Jessica Garza (McKinney, Texas).

Looking to earn all-conference honors for a second consecutive season, Garza has a team-leading scoring average of 80.4 with a low round of 76 this season. The winner of the Ladies Spring Classic at the Sherveport Country Club, Garza has been honored as Mid-Con Female Golfer of the Week four times this season, as she looks to cement herself as one of the premier golfers in the conference.

Sophomore Tracy Williams (Van Alstyne, Texas) and junior Chloe’ Mims (Texarkana, Texas) are averaging 81.1 and 81.2 per round, respectively.

Mims has the low round for the Ladies this season with a 73 shot in the first round of the South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invitational, while Williams has been steady in 16 rounds of play.

What may be the key for the Ladies is the play of the No. 4 and No. 5 starters in this week’s tournament.

Sophomore Leigh Newton (Edmonton, Alberta) and freshman Brittany Blackwell (Colleyville, Texas) are both shooting around 86 per round this season, looking to improve on that number Monday and Tuesday. Newton leads the team with 23 rounds play this season, while Blackwell has logged 20 rounds as a true freshman.

As team, the Ladies are averaging 330.7 per round, with a season-best round of 313.

Monday and Tuesday marks the first time in program history Centenary has hosted the conference tournament, looking for a good outing from both programs. Live scoring for the event can be found at www.Mid-Con.com and www.GoCentenary.com.
